Next week is the beginning of a new school year and many excited and anxious students will be on the street walking to school or waiting for a bus. No matter what route you travel, you will likely encounter a school bus. Section 175 (11) of the Highway Traffic Act states that every driver, when meeting on a highway, a stopped bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing, shall stop before reaching the school bus and shall not proceed until the overhead signal lights have stopped flashing. Every driver that approaches a stopped bus with its red signal lights flashing must stop at least 20 meters before reaching the stopped bus. These rules apply 24 hours a day on all roads. It is also important that motorists strictly obey the speed limits that are posted in each school zone. Following the rules of the road near schools will not only save you money and demerit points, it could quite possibly save an inattentive childs life. Starting the first week of school, Halton Police will be conducting a traffic enforce- ment initiative around school zones. Those that violate speed limits or those that do not stop for school buses will be stopped and fined. There will be zero tolerance shown to violators.
