16 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 2006 By Chuck Tysoe Over the years Acton Soc- cer Club has played host to many exciting finals tour- naments, with more than a fair share ending with un- derdogs, whether from the home town or another area club, emerging as unlikely champions after a season of cellar-dwelling or very aver- age play. Front-runners used to routine, high-scoring wins are waylaid by a combination of complacency, improved motivation and spirit in teams with whom theyre used to having their way, and the grueling schedule of games (up to fi ve or six) required to win a weekend tournament in the hot August or September sun. Caledons shocking 2-1 upset of League Champions Bolton Brazil in Acton Sunday afternoon at MSB field provided just such a story line. Despite several players suffering from the heat or injuries they engi- neered a marvelous late goal and held off Bolton by the quick of their fi ngernail to claim the Peel-Halton B-U16 Championship. The fi rst half ended locked at one after an early Cale- don goal was answered by a breathtaking strike from about 30 M out by Boltons top scoring player. Caledon roared back with two golden chances, one lofted with ex- cessive force just over the bar, the second pounding fl ush off the post. Caledon contested every ball in a manner the smooth-passing and highly organized Bolton squad were not accustomed to. Heat, the cumulative fa- tigue of five games in 36 hours, and then frustration began to take its toll. A Bolton free kick between the posts was taken not, after a brief argument, by the logi- cal choice, their goal-scoring wonder, and an almost sure goal was forfeited. Finally, persistence claimed its re- ward for Caledon. On a clever counterattack their left forward lofted a perfectly weighted ball from 15 yards away, barely over the goalies leap, which seemed to pause tauntingly against the far post before fainting wistfully across the line. This was a well-earned win from a classy side, the survivor of a seven-team round robin, including Grand Valley, Rockwood, two from Bolton (the third Bolton side was a very unsporting no- show), Erin-Hillsburgh and two from Acton. Both Acton sides played some fi ne soccer and had bright moments but were unable to make a dent in the fi nal four. A tentative settlement has been reached between the Halton District School Board and Haltons Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP) represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OS- STF), Halton. Continuing negotiations culminated in a deal reached on Monday of this week. The 4-year deal between the professional staff and the Halton District School Board will cover the time period from September 1, 2004 to August 31, 2008. Details of the settlement are to remain confidential and will not be released until ratifi cation by both parties. The Halton District School Board is expected to ratify at an upcoming special Board meeting, and the PSSP Bar- gaining Unit will hold its Ratification Meeting at the OSSTF District 20 Offi ce on Wednesday, September 6 at 4:30p.m. The Halton Professional Student Services Personnel employee group represents approximately 65 staff who work directly with students in the roles of psychological education consultants, speech language pathologists, social workers and child and youth counsellors.
