Profits from the Spot in the Park beer tent, one of the other two main revenue sources, should also top last year, and by all accounts, revenue from the midway will at least equal last year, making the fair a tremen- dous success. Revenue from the gate and parking totalled $66,500, the first time its topped the $60,000 mark since 2001. Fridays gate of $12,500 set a new record, and both Saturday ($38,500) and Sunday ($15,500) were close, according to tired but elated fair board officials on Sunday. Frances Niblock photo Ethel Gardiner will not seek re-election Public school trustee Ethel Gardiner announced this week that she will not be seeking a fifth term on Halton District School Board. She has served 11 years of her 50 years in education on the board, six as the chair, and 39 as an educator some as an Acton teacher. The decision was a diffi- cult one, she said in a terse press release. Several factors, primarily health issues, makes this the only choice at this time. Gardiner says she will be supporting Mike Parkhill, a Georgetown candidate for trustee, in the election on Monday, November 13. Its a pivotal year for Halton Hills with two trust- ees to be elected from the previous one. Continued on page 4 Bar owner charged with power theft A Mill Street bar owner was charged with theft of electricity following a brief investigation by Halton police, instigated by Halton Hills Hydro, on Friday afternoon. Police said hydro officials, concerned that the hydro connection to the bar had been tampered with, called them to Mannys Roadhouse at 3 p.m. We had concerns for safety because of the tampering, said Halton Detec- tive Sergeant Peter Hodgson, adding the business owner was arrested about an hour later at the Acton office of Halton Hills Hydro. Charged with theft of electricity, an uncommon charge except in grow op cases, police said, is Nicholas Proto- papas of Rosemary Road. He appears in Milton court on Oc- tober 6. New job centre opens September 26 The daunting and stressful task of finding a job will be easier for local unemployed residents when the Acton Employment Resource Centre opens at 45 Mill St. East on September 26. No longer will job searchers be forced to travel to Georgetown, Milton or Guelph often by public transit to get to a Federal job centre, now that Service Canada, the employment ser- vice delivery arm of Human Resources Development Canada, has contracted Links2Care formerly Halton Hills Community Support and Information to open and run the centre for two years, with a budget of $548,701. A recent study pegged the Acton unemployment rate at 5.6 per cent, and the Halton rate was 4 per cent.
