There was lots of interest during the open house at the Acton Seniors Centre last week. Quite a few new mem- bers signing up. Welcome everyone! I know you will enjoy the experience. Many were interested in the taichi, hiking and digital camera classes, while artistic people were joining the paper tole, scrap booking, watercolour and craft classes. I understand that at last weeks Friday afternoon bin- go share the wealth was $75. They have re arranged the seating so there is more room for bingo players. It starts at 1:15p.m., following the Friday lunch. The more ambitious members spend the day here playing shuffleboard in the morning, then break for lunch, followed by bingo. Last week we celebrat- ed 15 members birthdays which fell during August and September. The committee served cake and ice cream to 30 people. Everyone en- joyed themselves, chatting and comparing birth dates and ages. The carpet bowlers are in fine form again this season, although not everyone was out last week. Margaret tells me the Black team beat the Brown team 9 to 8. They even managed to persuade Pat Frizzell (who was work- ing at the front desk) to play as they had an uneven num- ber. Margaret Anderson is a little concerned as there are still quite a few gaps on the Rock-a-Thon schedule. If you would like to participate please drop in the Centre and sign up in one of the open spots. You will see members from the Acton Senior Centre at Sobeys for the next few weeks promoting our Centre prior to the big event. There are sponsor sheets there in the front entrance and the Cen- tre. There will be prizes and entertainment, Kevin Harris kindly offering to provide music to help keep us awake during the day (and night). We are still short of people at the front desk. If you would like to help please call 519-853-5951 or leave a note at the Centre and Alice Clark will be happy to get your message. We also need a few more people who are willing to drive some members to the Centre for different events. Shirley Hunter had the only mooner at the bid euchre last Thursday. The ladies who play every Thursday afternoon would love to see more people playing. The Welcome Back din- ner was well attended with 101 tickets sold. Everyone enjoyed the Swiss Chalet dinner, with corn, salads and veg, plus the delicious Apple Blossoms compli- ments of Chudleighs. Real Tetreault was very gener- ous and donated the juicy peaches and cream corn. The Harmoni Chords, a group of harmonica playing Seniors from Oakville entertained us with lots of familiar tunes, and were excellent. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success. We were happy to see some George- town members enjoy a social time with us. Hopefully we will see them again. There has been a com- petition looking for ideas on a mascot for the Seniors Centre. There were many great entries; the committee finally agreed that an Elf would be appropriate. Now we just need to find a name. Fern Jory came up with the mascot suggestion and won a prize which she donated back to the Centre. I am happy to say many of our members have picked up their newsletters, but there are still a few left. Please take yours when you are in next time. Thinking of newslet- ters, is there anything you would like to see included in it? If so please put a note in my folder in the office, and we will see if its something we should include. Talking to Marj Allen, who with her committee comes up with different speakers and events at the Centre, found us wondering if any- one would be interested in outside trips similar to the ones the M.I.M. men take? If you are, just let us know. I know I would have enjoyed a trip to the Toyota plant, or the Sleeman Brewery, or even a trip to a craft show. Eighteen Happy Hikers (including some new mem- bers) enjoyed a very popular spot for their hike last Fri- day. They hiked around the Rockwood Conservation Area. They were a little con- cerned that they would miss the Tim Hortons fix after the hike, but Bryan Alder (who lives in Rockwood) tells me they wont miss out as he has purchased some Tim Hortons coffee, and will be brewing it up at his home. (I understand his wife Kathleen will be making muffins, too.) If you are interested in joining them, they meet at the Centre at 10a.m. every Friday morning, and carpool to the various hiking destina- tions. The 50/50 jack pot was just over $150 this week and was won by Jeanne Burke. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: The Birthday Tea saw 15 members of the Acton Seniors Centre enjoying cake and ice cream with their guests last Tuesday. Left to right are Loretta Ivanyshyn, Heinz Rusche, Pat Patterson, Stella Brunelle, Donna Rowley, Joan Bateman, Real Tetreault, Shirley Broostad, Peggy DeBruyn, Ron Saunders, Lloyd Broostad, Pauline Barlow, Bette Footitt, Jeanne Burke, and last but not least Ruth Burke.
