Call Betty Ann 853-1944 Outreach team surveying town Over the past three months, Bethel Christian Reformed Church has been interviewing key leaders, organizations and agencies that are active in the com- munity of Acton in order to understand what needs are already being met and to identify the range of service and activity in this community. At the same time, they want to discover ways that the church can be effectively involved in Acton possibly through already active organizations or seeking possible new op- portunities to help people with specific needs. The seven members of the Community Oppor- tunity Scan Team from Bethel Church have been very impressed with the local agency and organiza- tional leaders, politicians, school principals and oth- ers, who so far have been very gracious in giving of their valuable time. We can tell that the peo- ple we have talked to so far love our small town and care about the community. We still have a number of interviews to do and we are also to the point where we are wondering about how to most effectively hear from the person who just lives in our town, the Acton resident, without do- ing the phone interview or the door to door campaign that sometimes people find intrusive. Its important to us to find a way to hear what people have to say. Thats how we came up with the idea to offer a survey on the website comments Diane, outreach coordinator for Bethel church. Copies will be available at Wall to Wall, Willow Lane Natural Foods, Links2Care (for- merly Halton Hills Social Services) to accommodate those who do not have in- ternet access. The past two summers, the church has offered the summer sports event in their church parking lot, and through this and other ministries that the church offers, they sense that they have generally formed good relationships with individuals and families in the community and hope that people will take a few minutes of their time to respond to the survey. Gert, one of the team members and a deacon at the church notes that this informa- tion will be valuable to us as a church so that we can recognize the greatest needs for our town. Go to the website at www.actoncrc.com or one of the locations mentioned in order to participate in the survey. MODELING SUCCESS: Rockwood sculptor Candice Raquel Lee participated in the huge Toronto Art Expo last week. She was selected through a juried process as one of over 300 Canadian and International artists to exhibit her work. The show was off to a flying start for Lee as she sold one of her larger pieces on the first night. - Rebecca Ring Photo Bill, Diane Citizens of Year... Continued from page 1 to parade day. When one parade ends, the Spielvogels begin planning for the next year, and already have had a number of calls from schools and groups planning to enter floats for this years parade through the streets of Acton. Weve always enjoyed the work its absolutely a labour of love. We dont think of it as a job its a lot of fun and Bills favourite thing when he rides in the parade is seeing the kids faces, particularly when they see Santa Claus. The theme for this years parade, on November 17, is A Disney Christmas. The Spielvogels will re- ceive the Citizen of the Year honours at a Rotary dinner. There were 27 letter sub- mitted to Acton Rotary Club nominating seven very worthy recipients to receive Citizen of the Year honours. Judges George Elliott, Dale Hewitt and Janice Fread, all past recipients of the award, spent two hours of careful deliberation before they made their choice. They decided that Bill and Dianes tremendous commitment over the past 25 years at the helm of the Acton Fire Fighters annual Santa Claus parade put them at the top of the list. Bill, the Chief-Elf, is a good people person who makes sure that everyone in- volved in the parade receives his appreciation and at the same time is signed up for the following year! Those in the know say the parade is organized down to the last detail, proof of the planning that takes place all year round. The result is as noted by one of the nominators: The parade route is lined with people and year-by- year the number is growing and as always there are lots of children; this is likely the biggest thrill, to see the look of excitement and anticipa- tion in the childrens eyes. We are quite certain that if you ask Spie and Diane what the one thing they enjoy most about the parade, their answer would likely be the children..and everything else.
