THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2007 THE NEW TANNER 19 EWAG NEWS Special... Thurs., Fri. & Sats Foil Hi-lights, cut included by Bonnie $77.00 & up 155 Main St. S. Rockwood 519-856-0803 Kass Weideman - Owner expires Saturday, June 2nd By Rebecca Ring Guelph/Eramosa Councillor John Scott attended his first council meeting on Mon- day since being charged with assault on March 28 by the O.P.P. Councillor Reta Moyer accused Scott of shouting at her in rage and swinging his fists close to her face at a March 19 closed session of council. He signed an assurance that he would not come within 500-metres of Moyer or anywhere she is expected and that he would have no direct or indirect contact with her. This meant they could not both attend council meetings. On Monday, however, Scotts lawyer met with a Justice of the Peace to allow Scott to attend council. He was granted permission in a Recognizance of Bail in the amount of $1,000. The conditions of bail are that he cannot communicate or associate with Moyer, or come within 500-metres of her residence or any place she is expected, except at council meetings. He is not allowed to possess fire- arms, crossbows or anything intended for use as a weapon under the Criminal Code of Canada. Moyer said she was advised of the bail agreement. She contends Scott did not want to pay for a security guard to attend council meetings and says she did not want this cost to fall on the taxpayers, so a video camera was put in chambers instead. But Scott said his lawyer told the Justice of the Peace that he was willing to pay for security guards or police officers to attend meetings. It was not required, Scott said. Mayor White said the camera was put in chambers to film proceedings to keep a proper record on the suggestion of CAO/ Clerk Janice Sheppard. Camera films council following assault charge This year, May 13th through May 19th, 2007 has been designated Police Week throughout Ontario. This is an annual event, which is dedicated to Crime Prevention, recognition and awareness of Policing Services in the community. Since 1970, Police Week has been observed in May, coinciding with Peace Officers Memorial Day, recognized interna- tionally as May 15. This years theme is Safer Communities for a Stron- ger Ontario. The theme will focus on heighten- ing community awareness by promoting personal and public safety through prevention, preparedness and social development. The provincial govern- ment and all police services in Ontario will continue to work with communi- ties to create strategies to address local issues. By strengthening the com- munities in which we live, we will be able to provide our people with a quality of life that is second to none. For the police and their communities, working together is essential in pre- venting crime and building stronger communities. In Wellington County, there are many special events that have been planned to highlight Police Week. A Police Week Display will take place at Stone Road Mall in tomorrow and Saturday, May 12th. Both the Guelph Police Service and the County of Wellington O.P.P. will have displays. Members of the public are wel- come to come and see the various specialized units within each police service. During Police Week, the County of Wellington O.P.P. will have Open Houses and they invite members of the public to come to any one of our offices and take a tour of the detach- ment. You will have an opportunity to see the many services that are available within your community.
