The teams remained scoreless until with about ten minutes left to go in the game Ellen Hannah, with her first goal of the year, found the net for Acton. When Bolton started to mount some offensive attacks in the second half they were stopped by defender Erica Mills . This allowed the goalkeeping tandem of Joanie Weaver and Emily Bent to maintain their shutout. This Thursday Acton Villa Girls are at home with their 3-0 record on the line against the Georgetown2 team. Villa girls post shutout Actons Under-12 Otten Heritage Contracting boys team ran its season-start- ing unbeaten streak to two games with a thrilling 3-3 tie at Elizabeth St., on 29 May. The match was played before an enthusiastic crowd of parents, half of whom had made the journey from Erin and Hillsburgh to cheer on the red HEADS team. The game was action packed, and at the start of the first half, most of that action was packed in the Otten half of the field. The Acton boys refused to crumble under the sustained pressure for quite some time, before it all paid off for HEADS and the score was 1-0. This seemed to inspire the Otten boys, and they began to move the ball very well, particularly Alex Cardoso, Matt Doraty and Eric Mac- Callum. Eventually, Acton won a penalty, which Mac- Callum converted skillfully: high and with power. The Acton boys took a 2- 1 lead going into half time, courtesy of a second Mac- Callum strike. In the second half, during Actons bright- est spell of the match where the ball was constantly in HEADS territory, MacCal- lum brilliantly chipped over the goalie for the best goal of the game and a 3-1 lead. Now HEADS started to dominate, and it was thanks to Luke Ottens inspired goal keeping that the score remained 3-1 for so long, but eventually the determined Otten on an unbeatable streak HEADS forwards managed to take advantage of a tiring Acton defensive team to even the score at 3-3. A tie was a fair result on the balance of play, and both teams will be looking for- ward to their next league matches. Under-16 Boys: Dennys Insurance falls to Caledon Actons U-16B team Den- nys Insurance team has the skills and attitude to have a fun and successful season, but notched up a second suc- cessive loss at a bug-infested Acton High School on Mon- day May 28. Caledon won the North- Peel Halton Soccer League U-16B cup last season, and so start this season as one of the favourites. For the first half-hour, their skillful play was matched by the Acton team, resulting in some very accomplished soccer for the watching crowds. The chanc- es started to fall Caledons way late in the first half, and they took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break. During the second half, Caledon appeared the fitter team, and as time progressed and Dennys pushed for a goal, more openings ap- peared. The final score at 7-0 was certainly not a reflection of the gap between the two sides. The Acton crowd take heart from the first half hour, where the teams were on a par with each other, and so by the time they meet again in early-August, we expect the scoreline to be much tighter. The Bantam boys started strongly with a win on Friday night over Fullerton, but on Saturday failed to pick up a win necessary to qualify for the semifinal. After a tournament open- ing game loss to a select team from Owen Sound, Rockwoods Midget boys team came on strong quali- fying for the semi-final with wins over Monkton and Stratford. Despite some excellent defensive plays the boys were no match for the more experienced team from Linwood coming up well short on the scoreboard in the semif ina l game o n S u n d a y mo r n i n g . Both teams represented Rockwood with pride, good manners and sportsmanship. The Bantams play home games Wednesdays 8:30 p.m. at Rockmosa, and the Midgets play on Thursdays 8:30 p.m. at Lloyd Dyer. Bearcats look to next season Theres always next year. Thats the somewhat op- timistic outlook from Acton Bearcats softball team coach/ teacher Lisa Rebane after the squad was eliminated from the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association playoffs with a 12-2 home loss to Oakvilles Iroquois Ridge last Tuesday. Both Whitney Carroll and Sara Doolan had double plays and Ashley Burke had five strikeouts and Shelby Davis had three strikeouts, Rebane said on Friday, add- ing Doolan brought in Carroll and pitcher Davis to score in the fifth. We started strong and it went downhill from there, she said. The team had just one win-a convincing 12-0 rout of Oakvilles Loyola-in a seven-game season. I thought it would be our best yearwe had a lot of ex - perienced players compared to other years. We thought this would be the year. Maybe it was too much pressure.
