THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2007 THE NEW TANNER 13 with The New Tanner Sports Rebecca Schoenhardt, Erin I drive a diesel and get about 1,000-kilometres per tank, so Im not too con- cerned about gas prices, but people need to be a little more aware of the en- vironmental impact of their driving, and maybe if high gas prices will make them drive less, and be more ef- ficient with [running] their errands, then I think its a fine thing. Gasoline prices dropped below $1 per litre recently causing lineups at both Acton gas stations. Have you changed your driving habits or holiday plans because of the usually higher cost of gas? Lormar McGinn, Acton I just fill up and go I dont like it and I get mad at the pumps, but Im not going to change how I live because of the high prices. I filled up my van in the States and it was $30 less, even with the exchange. Jennifer Drumm, Brampton I need the car to go to work and I need the car to drop off my son at day care if they charged a buck twenty, Id have to pay it. If it was just me, Id use public transit, but its not fast or easy with him (her baby). Lori Wilkinson, Acton, My husband and I have both been riding our motor- cycles more this year than we ever have before, mostly because of the gas prices. Were taking a driving holi - day this summer, but were taking the motorcycles. VOX POP By Frances Niblock Signs warning the water was unsafe due to high bacteria levels did not deter a Bramp- ton father who allowed his two young children to play in the contami- nated water at the Old Beach in Prospect Park on Saturday afternoon. Although the pre-schoolers didnt go in over their knees, the amount of E.coli in Fairy Lake could cause intestinal disorders and eye or ear infections if it entered the body through a cut or open sore, accord- ing to health officials who test the water weekly. Poor water quality has closed the Old Beach for the past four weeks in a row the beach has only been open for three weeks since testing began on June 5 at seven Halton locations. Results of the testing is posted on a 24- hour beach hotline and updated weekly or as conditions change. Jacek Jackiewicz of Brampton had a pic- nic in the park with his family on Saturday, and said he was not worried about high levels of bacteria in the water. My kids are okay. They played a little bit on the shore they walked in but didnt get (their) heads wet. Im from Poland, so I never had problem with bacteria. I never cared, he said, adding it was his second visit to Prospect Park. Faced with people ignoring the signs advising them to call the hotline to check the water quality, Halton health and envi- ronment supervisor Paul Burgher said the repeated closures at the Old Beach have caused some concerns but they believe they know where the contamination is coming from from several storm water drains, from goose droppings and from lack of movement in the lake. He said the weekly testing involves tak- ing water samples from five areas along the beach, and some weeks the results have been way past acceptable levels and some weeks they been over, but closer to a pass. The numbers can be taken out of context, but there is a strong relationship between increased levels of E. coli in the water and the possible incidence of swimming-associ- ated gastroenteritis, Burgher said, adding he didnt know if the beach hotline is well used and is an effective public safety tool. Asked if Halton would close the Old Beach if the high bacteria levels continue, Burgher said they have not thought it out that far to say maybe we should close it, but they may re-evaluate the beachs status as a recreational swimming area next year. Well continue to test this year, and maybe next year well meet with the Town and see how we should approach it, Bur- gher said. Contaminated water closes old beach in park again Dear editor; Ive had some very nice compliments on the display of flags on the funeral home, but, someone raised concern over their arrangement. In the past Ive heard a couple of points of view on flying flags and I thought Id better look up the protocol in case I have it wrong. In doing so, I learned a lot about the fly- ing of flags in Canada and I think I have it right I copied a portion of information from the Ministry on the flying of flags. The Department of Cana- dian Heritage Rules for Flying the Flag Updated April 2003 - changes will be reflected in new edition of Flag Etiquette publication....When the Na- tional Flag of Canada is flown alone on top of or in front of a building where there are more than two flagpoles, it should be flown as near as possible to the centre. Three flags When only three flags are displayed, the National Flag should be at the centre. To an observer facing the dis- play, the second-ranking flag (in order of precedence) is placed to the left of centre, and the other to the right. A common combination of flags is that of the Na- tional Flag of Canada with a provincial or territorial flag, and a municipal flag or Flag etiquette Continued on page 15 D. Acton Minor Baseball Meals on Wheels is a wonderful service in our community, and there is a growing need for volun- teers, especially in Acton. Volunteers are needed mid- morning to pick up Meals in Milton and additional volunteers are needed from 11 a.m. until around noon to deliver meals in the Acton area. The time commitment would be between one and two hours either once a week or alternating weeks. Mileage is reimbursed and vacation time is respected! If you would enjoy being a volunteer in these programs, please call Terri or Marlene at 519-853-3310. Help for the Grieving- What to Say? Being a friend or neighbour has many challenges; espe- cially when someone you care about has had a loved one pass away. When some- one is grieving, they are also dealing with so many issues, and it makes you wonder what to say or do, when to visit, and how to communi- cate in a helpful way. If you have wondered about helping a grieving friend, or if you have experienced grief and could share your thoughts, please join us for an evening of desserts and beverages and an informal discussion led by Roz Kunze on Monday, August 20 at 7 p.m. at the Off the Wall Youth Centre, 47 Mill Street East, Acton.
