Drinking, Driving Wellington OPP officers were conducting Reduce Im- paired Driving Everywhere spot checks on Falls Street, Rockwood, on Saturday Au- gust 4. Speeder of the week Offi cers with Wellington OPP Traffic Management Unit were conducting radar enforcement on Highway 6 of Puslinch Twp. when Constable David Brazier observed a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup travelling well above the posted speed limit. A 21year-old Woodstock man has been charged with speeding at 152km/h in the 80km/h zone. He is sched- uled to appear in Guelph Court on September 19 to answer to the charge. Tool theft Wellington OPP are asking the publics help regarding the reported theft of tools from a constructions site at Ridge Top Crescent in Rockwood on Saturday, August 4. Offi cers found that some- time overnight thieves pried open a locked utility trailer left at the site and removed a large quantity of tools val- ued at $2,500. It included a twin tank air compressor, air nailer in black case, 9.6 volt Makita cordless drill, a cord- less 6 circular saw, a laser level in yellow case and a 100 ft yellow extension cord as well as various hand tools and a wooden 2 tool box. A two vehicle collision west of Rockwood on Highway 7 and Jones Baseline on Thurs- day, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. took the life of a Guelph man and injured a man from Limehouse. Wellington OPP said the collision occurred when a Chevrolet Malibu southbound on the Jones Baseline entered the intersection of Hwy. 7 and was struck by a Ford pick-up travelling west in 7. The intersection has stop signs for north and southbound traffi c on the Jones Baseline. The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu, Kirk Dowling 41 of Guelph, was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital in critical con- dition. He later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Ford pick-up, Donald C. Brooks 27, of Limehouse, was taken to Guelph General Hospital, treated for non-life threatening injuries and released. Wellington O.P.P. Traffi c Management Unit was called to the scene to assist with the investigation and roadway was closed for several hours. Wildl i fe habi ta ts are shrinking and the risk of hitting a deer on the roads is increasing, police say. Wel- lington has experienced 133 dear/vehicle reported colli- sions in the fi rst six months of 2007, a statistic which points clearly to a problem. Deer pose a serious safe- ty risk for drivers and it is important for drivers to be aware of a potential collision and take proper precautions including: * Wearing your seatbelt * Staying awake, alert and sober * Driving with extra cau- tion when driving through deer-crossing zones * When driving at night, use high beams when there is no oncoming traffi c to better illuminate deer on, or near the road * Taking extra caution from sunset to midnight, and the hours shortly before and after sunrise, as these are the most high-risk times for deer- vehicle collisions * If faced with a deer in your path, brake fi rmly, but stay in your lane. Many deer- related collisions occur when drivers swerve into traffi c to avoid a deer. In the event that your ve- hicle strikes a deer, call the County of Wellington OPP immediately.
