The Heritage committee, along with two or three members of council had de- cided that they want to use the local Cenotaph to show support for our Canadian troops and that it was the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, etc. I told him I was in sup- port of what they wanted to do in principle but I wasnt in support of what they wanted to do at the Cenotaph which, according to Mayor Chris White, was put up four more flag poles at the Cenotaph and fly the Jack & the army, navy and air force flags. I informed him that the army, navy and air force were insignias, not flags, and I would be willing to get all the available information I could lay my hands on to help them and that I did not think it appropriate to fly those particular items at the Cenotaph. The answer I got was that it was their Cenotaph and they could fly what they wanted. Councillor Scott seemed to agree and said he would look into it himself. I did not give up. I served in the Royal Canadian Navy and have been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for a lot of years. I may be old but I am not about to stand by and let our Ceno- taph be used as anything but for what it was intended. The standard that we need to know to make those kinds of decisions are laid down by Canadian Heritage. That is where the Legion gets their information. Which was disrespectfully called The Jack. That flag is not only the Royal Union Flag but is also the flag of a sovereign coun- try, namely Great Britain and you dont fly another countrys flag on a Canadian Cenotaph. The Canadian flag and the Cenotaph should not be subject to indignities by anyone and that includes politicians at any level be it federal, provincial or in this case municipal. By the way, I got 13 pages from the Canadian Heritage, which I gave to the Twp. Of Guelph/Eramosa. I had since obtained two pages and a phone call from the same source and a copy of an email from the past chairman of the Domin- ion Command Ritual and Awards Committee, Royal Canadian Legion.
