Continued from page 1 if things go real well, and of course, if theres two days of rain next week, that schedule wont be adhered to, Goddard said. He said after the manhole is replaced at the intersec- tion, crews would continue to lay new sanitary sewer pipe in a section northerly towards Knox Street, and the next work would be re- placement of the watermain between Church Street and Mill Street. It will take the next four weeks to get the rest of the sanitary (pipes) in and do the rest of the watermain and then theres some storm sewer work on Vimy (street) to do and then well begin the reconstruction of the road, Goddard said, add- ing there havent been any surprises, but it take longer than expected to remove the old manhole out at the Church street intersection because of all the other services like gas and Bell Canada that are located in a tight confined area. With our maintenance program, were confident weve taken the steps to en- sure that our infrastructure is meeting the minimum standards required, said Chris Mills, the Towns Director of Engineering, Public Works and Building on Friday as rescue workers continue to search for bod- ies in the aftermath of the collapse of the Minnesota bridge. There are 57 bridges in Halton Hills 12 of them in urban Acton and they are inspected every four years by a contracted structural engineer. In the intermediate two years, the contractor re-in- spects those bridges where maintenance issues were identified in the four-year review to ensure the situa- tion hasnt deteriorated. Every two years we get the inspection reports from that and they are used as the basis to develop our capital (budget) program for repairs, Mills said, adding the last interium review was last year and the next full review is in 2008. In general, most of our issues, or maintenance items relate to the approaches and guide rails, before you ac- tually get onto the bridge structure thats where the majority of our issues are, Mills said, adding the review did not identify any bridges that had significant structural issues that would result in safety concerns. The 2007 capital budget includes money to begin de- sign work for the significant rehabilitation in 2009 of the Glen Williams bridge(s). Mills said there are no bridges in the Acton area that are on the list for re- pairs, but everything is subject to change depend- ing on the structural review reports. Mills said the Minnesota bridge disaster makes them appreciate how much work they have done in the area of bridge inspection. It confirms that weve set up the right programs because we have the in- formation about what that state of our bridges. I was saddened by the news and concerned and very much want to find out why it hap- pened, but Im not seeing a link to any of the Halton Hills bridges, Mills said.
