By Rebecca Ring At least 30 homes in Guelph/Eramosa will be tested for lead in their water between December 2007 and April 2008, according to Manager of Public Works, Ken Gagnon. Mayor Chris White says the issue is not with the municipal water supply, but rather ensur- ing that water pipes inside private residences are not contaminated with lead. The sampling program is an initiative of Ontarios Ministry of Environment. Gagnon says the program is in its early development stages. Right now we are sifting through the regulations to develop a detailed plan. It appears that 20 residences in Rockwood and ten in Cross Creek will be tested, he says. Associated lab and operator costs are also being determined. White says it is a private property issue, mandated by the province onto the munici- pality. The province has not provided any funds for the program at this point, but it is new enough that there may be something in the works.
