By Chuck Tysoe Smiles, red faces and plenty of fun were on display for all of last week on the brown, dry turf of the Elizabeth Street soccer field. Sixteen local boys and girls aged 7 through 12 took part each day from 9 to 3 in a soccer camp, organized by the Crossroads Community Church in partnership with Athletes in Action (AIA). Hot, clear skies and the prickly field did nothing to stifle the abundant enthu- siasm of these youngsters as they chased soccer balls and sometimes each other around the pitch. If Ca- nadian kids love anything these days, its soccer; this well-structured program with an obviously very qualified and caring staff together with several com- munity volunteers had the participants giving their all. One or two of the kids how- ever did look a little overage and the grey hair wasnt a good disguise! Each morning was spent introducing a new skill to the players in groups, followed by a Coaches Corner, in which the staff took turns speaking about what Jesus Christ means to them, talking about over- coming challenges in life and interacting with the kids. Afternoons were for daily World Cup Tourna- ments, a series of games. Spokeswoman Liz Cam- eron said the organizers are pleased with the initial experience, and are hoping as many as 100 will enroll next year. Some of the vol- unteers came from the Erin Village Alliance Church, a sister church of Crossroads which has been successfully holding the camps in Erin for several years. Coaches Reuben, Alicia and Liz are students and varsity soccer players at Redeemer University in Ancaster; head coach Dar- ren is a Redeemer Grad now serving full-time on the staff of Athletes in Action. Based in Langley, B.C., AIA is a branch of Campus for Christ, an internation- al Christian organization working primarily at post- secondary institutions. The crew has been traveling around Ontario for the sum- mer holding the week-long sessions and billeting with local families.
