We live in a small community where everyone knows each other and we actually say hi to our neighbours and people we meet downtown. So why is it important to shop local? It keeps our downtown viable. A community or town is only as good as the people that live in it. If we continue to shop local it creates jobs here at home. The more people shop elsewhere, the fewer businesses and services we will have here at home. We might think we are saving money by clipping coupons and going to the larger centres to shop but really we are spending money on gas, wear and tear on our vehicle and wasting our pre- cious time that we could be spending with out families or volunteering in our community, plus after-sales service is easier when you shop at home. You get better service from local merchants who take pride in their business and community that they work and live in. A lot of our small town business support local sports clubs, service clubs and donate to vari- ous fundraisers. Why not take the time to thank your local businesses for all they do for our community by shopping local and keep jobs and money in our community? The Town of Halton Hills has organized a Green Plan Task Force and the Acton BIA wants to be a part of it. How does shopping local fi t in to this plan you may ask? By shopping local we are cutting down on vehicle emissions, saving fuel and this alone will make a signifi cant impact on our environment. Other ways we can help the environment is by recycling and one way we can do this is by taking a travel cup when we visit our favorite coffee shop for take-out. Styrofoam is one of the hardest materials to break down in the environment. Another big one is plastic water bottles, why not invest in a water fi ltration system, it would probably pay for itself within a year. We are all proud of our town and want it to remain prosperous and a great place to live. Support your community Shop Local It Pays. Upcoming downtown Acton events: 1. Halloween Haunted house, Saturday October 27th at Off The Wall Youth Centre from 1-3 p.m. Our theme this year is Scoobie Doo and the Haunted House. 2. Acton Firefi ghters Santa Claus Parade, Saturday, November 17 Shop Local
