Staff at HHFPPS are encouraging families to plan their escape, to be prepared and above all to install and maintain smoke alarms. Fire creates thick smoke and deadly gases that make it hard to see or breathe. A home escape plan prepares everyone so they can escape quickly and safely. In a fire, hesitation resulting from not knowing what to do can be deadly. Having an escape plan and practising it can make the difference between living to share the experience with others, or possibly dying from the experience, says fire safety specialist Dave Ford. A 2004 study commissioned by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs found that 64% of Canadians claim to have a home escape plan. Of this 64%, 63% had not practised their escape plan with family members even once. Most people underestimate the speed and power of fire and smoke, and the danger they pose, says Fire Chief Brent Marshall. As a result, they get complacent about fire safety. It seems hard to believe but, every second counts in a fire. When a fatality occurs close to home, people do change their attitudes and adopt life-saving behaviour. Marshall says, Even then it appears it is only for the short term before the same people lax back to previous behaviours. A province-wide fire drill is being organized to increase public fire safety awareness and to encourage children to practise home escape plans. On Friday Oct. 12, after months of organizational meetings by a dozen or so Branch 197 Legion members, the Fall Convention of District B, Ontario Command will commence at the Legion by the lake. We ask the citizens of Acton to welcome the delegates and their spouses to our town. Also, on Sun. Oct. 14, we extend an invitation to all resi- dents to come out and view the parade, starting at 1 pm from the Branch to the cenotaph at Trinity United Church. There will be lots of march- ing units, colour parties, and bands to be seen and heard. A great chance for you, the citi- zens of Acton, to show your support for our armed forces.
