THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2007 11 Friday, Sept. 28 marked the first game of the season for the Acton Tanners Nov- ice BB team and if the steady, consistent play this young team exhibited during their first showdown against the Georgetown Raiders is any indication, were in for a heck of a year. The young Tanners came off the bench displaying a hunger to establish them- selves as the team to beat. Well into the latter portion of the first period, the Raid- ers got lucky, but it didnt last for long as the Tanners responded just minutes later with their own goal by Joey Reid, assisted by William Vatsis. The second period was just as exciting with the Tanners coming close with many shots on goal in an attempt to break the tie, but the Raiders responded first with the next goal. Again, it did not last long as Marshall Harkins scored the second tiebreaker unassisted. The third period showed both teams unwilling to go home with a loss and the final score was 2-2. Their persistent play continued when facing the Orangeville Flyers for the first home game on Satur- day. The first period yielded no goals from either side and allowed the talents of goaltender Andrew Wright to shine. The second period clearly highlighted the nev- er give up attitude of this young team as Orangeville took a 2-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Marshall Harkins, with help from Matthew Gib- bons and Brenden Geim, put Acton on the scoreboard. Into the final period, Acton evened the score again with another great goal by Wil- liam Vatsis, assisted by Sean Caruso. Orangeville got the go-ahead goal next but in the end, the Tanners refused to quit and scored the tie- breaker, thanks again to the talents of William Vatisis, with assists going to Harkins and Caruso. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. With the grit and determi- nation shown by this young team over the past week- end, the Acton Novice BB Tanners are sure to have one exciting season. Stay tuned Undefeated in League Play Novice Tanners semi-finalists at Schomberg tournament The seasons first tournament for the Acton Novice BB Tanners last Friday was in Schomberg. The Tanners were one of six teams competing for top honours in the annual Red & White tournament. Actons first game against the Millbrook Stars was a stellar performance for the Tanners demonstrating the scoring finesse of the Acton squad. It started minutes into the game, with a first, unassisted goal from winger Jillian Banks; followed closely with a second, by Marshall Hawkins and assisted by Banks. Acton kept the pressure on Millbrook with a third goal near the end of the period, courtesy of William Vatsis with the assist going to John McKee. Finally, the last minute of the period had Joey Reid put one in the net this time, with the assist going to McKee. In the second period, Millbrook rallied back with a goal early on, but the Tanners proved to be too formidable an opponent, and had two more goals in quick succes- sion, both by winger Brenden Geim; the first assisted by Reid and Zach Snow and the second assisted by Harkins and Jakob Cunningham. By the time the third period rolled around, the Stars were licking their wounds and just couldnt form a comeback when faced with two more quick goals from the young Tanner squad, both unassisted, with the first courtesy of Joey Reid and the second by Brenden Geim. The final score was 8-2, in the next round. Acton faced the Milton Winterhawks. It was an even match for the first two periods with neither team willing to allow the first goal. Tanner net minders Ian Early and Andrew Wright showed finesse in the crease and the defensive lines of Nicholas Percy, Sean Caruso, Zach Snow, Evan Pike, Johanthan Schmidt and John McKee all did a superlative job keeping the puck out of Tanner territory. The first goal, with 6 minutes left in the third period, was a beauty, orchestrated by Brenden Geim and assisted by Johnathan Schmidt. Unfortunately, Milton evened things up shortly and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Day two of the tourney, had Acton going head-to-head with host team, the Schomberg Red Wings. After a scoreless first period with the forward line of Matt Gibbons and Garret MacMillan having some good chances, the Tanners headed into the second with two goals in quick succession late in the period, the first a beauty by Marshall Harkins, as- sisted by Nicholas Percy and Sean Caruso. Less than a minute later, the second was pro- vided by Brenden Geim, assisted by Harkins and Matthew Gibbons. Schomberg rallied early in the third, but Acton refused to let up with Geim providing yet another rocket to the back of the net, assisted by Harkins. Final score, 3-1. The semi-final game had Acton squaring off against the Elora Lightning. Again, the Tanners continued to keep the pressure on with two goals early in the first period: the first by Joey Reid, assisted by Evan Pike, and the second by Brenden Geim, assisted by Matthew Gibbons. However, Elora also came through with a goal of their own. In the second period, the Lightning tied things up and things stayed that way until the last period. Ultimately, despite having put up a good fight, Elora came through with the game winning goal in the third.
