A year later, Henderson and Sharon married and moved into the Maria Street apartments. Three years later welcomed the birth of their first child, Mark who cur- rently resides in Pembroke as the manager of a Value Vil- lage. Three years later came their daughter, Beth who currently lives in Smithers, British Columbia, as a For- est Researcher. Hendersons two youngest children, Matt, 26, and Emily, 21, are still living at their Cobblehill home, which Henderson moved to 15 years ago. Matt is working as a camp coun- selor and Emily is in her third year of Nursing at Conestoga College. On Nov. 2, 1985, 22 years ago, Henderson was trans- ferred to the Acton Post Office where he has con- tinued to be a Relief Letter Carrier. Ive enjoyed saying hello to people on Elmore and then the next week the people on Longfield. Ive really got to know the people around town, said Henderson. I move around from street to street. When asked what has changed in his 35 years of service, Henderson replied with Its a little more imper- sonal and more hurry up. I dont know if life was more laid back or if the postal service was more laid back when I first started. Over the last few years, Henderson has been busy with the fair board devel- oping the new building in Prospect Park. He has also been a group commissioner for the Acton Scouts for many years and very active at Knox Presbyterian Church. Ive put in my time, so my 35 years is up. Im looking forward to the time off. Henderson plans to catch up on work around his home, as well as keeping busy with his volunteer services around Acton. He, and wife Sharon, spent a month in August visiting their daughter Beth in B.C. and intend to visit more often. Hendersons wife Sharon is throwing him a Happy Retirement party this Sat- urday, Nov. 3 at the Acton Legion between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Please drop by and wish George all the best in the future. Well wishes only please. Congratulations George from all of us at The New Tanner and those around Acton and Georgetown who have had the pleasure to get to know you through your routes. George Henderson is retiring after 35 years in the postal service REMOVING TOWER: Renovations to rebuild the old Town Halls roof and bell tower started on Thursday, Oct. 25 with removal of the tower. Matthew Reid photo Old town hall... tion date back. The roof will be topped off with ce- dar shingles, and an overall facelift. The new extended roof for the bell tower is completed and awaits installation in one of the bays in the fire hall and was hoisted in place on Tuesday of last week. The condition of the original bell tower was deteriorat- ing as water was leaking in through the roof. This was a great op- portunity to get in and give the place a face lift, says Burrell. Renovations inside the 124-year-old building will also be taking place; which include paint, plaster and a general clean up. The hall, which is located on the second floor, will be restored as well as the old entertainment stage which was the scene of concerts and performances of all kinds over a century. Fundraising for the proj- ect was done by Heritage Acton, which owns both the Town Hall and the old Acton Fire Hall. Heritage Acton bought the Town Hall from the Town of Halton Hills for one dollar over 20 years ago. The Town of Halton Hills wanted to tear it down to make room for parking lots; much to the dismay and anger of Acton residents who organized and Heritage Acton bought the old Fire Hall when the new one was completed in 1994. Its exciting, Burrell ex- plains. It will totally change the look of the building, THE NEW TANNER Your Hometown Newspaper contiued from page 1 continued from page 1
