Rockwoods Andrew Marcoux lights fire under Kingston Vees Kingston KIMCO Voyag- ers (Vees) of the Provincial Junior A Hockey League are happy that Rockwoods Andrew Marcoux wants to be a firefighter and picked St. Lawrence College for the course. Marcoux, formerly of the Mississauga Ice Dogs and Jr. B Guelph Dominators, was courted by the Kingston club after he was released by the Ice Dogs a year ago but decided to play near his RR1 Rockwood home with Guelph. However, this year, the Vees remained interested and Brendan Devine, also from Rockwood and a Kingston player, persuaded the 19- year-old winger to join the Vees. The decision was helped by Marcouxs interest in becoming a firefighter and a course in nearby St. Law- rence College at Brockville. He moved to Kingston to join the Vees. After 18 games in the league, Marcoux is the Vees leading scorer with 12 goals and 23 assists and in the top 20 in the province. His game has drawn the ad- miration of Vees fans and the coach, Evan Robinson, who is impressed not only with Marcouxs ability but his character as well, he explained in a recent feature article in the Kingston Whig Standard. The article states: His skill level and the kind of character he has it is nice to have a kid like that, Robinson said. Andrew is such a team guy. He really considers himself another spoke in the wheel. He has been a consummate leader on and off the ice. Marcoux, originally draft- ed into the Ontario Hockey League in 2004 by the Sagi- naw Spirit, ended up with the Mississauga Ice Dogs for the 2005-06 season. He played 57 games, scored a couple of goals and finished with five points. I was too young and not good enough when I went to Saginaw. They released my name to all [OHL teams]. Just by luck I ended up with Mississauga, had a good camp and made the team. I started there again last year but things didnt work out, Marcoux said. Coach Robinson told the Whig Standard the five-foot- ten, 175 pound Marcoux has been a huge pick-up for their hockey club. Were in this position (first place in the Eastern Conference) be- cause of the play of Andrew Marcoux. Marcoux travels to and from Brockville each day for his firefighting classes. He says that while it is a hectic schedule at times, mapping out his day makes it work. Andrew is the youngest son of Michael and Lynn Marcoux of RR1, Rockwood and the grandson of Jean and Frances Marcoux of Acton. The family has long excelled in hockey and lacrosse in this area. In the first game of Friday night ladies hockey, Jenn Stelmach and Carrie Gallant led the Cougars to a 3-2 victory over the Devils by scoring a goal and an assist each. Evelyn Kamminga also scored for the Cougars while Deanne Cowie added a pair of assists and Anna White had a single. D.L. Greig and Diane Blazenko potted goals for the Devils. Kim Bandy had 2 assists and Carolyn Hill added 1 assist in the 3-2 game. In the second game, Coop recorded her second shut-out of the season by backstopping the Sharks in a 2 0 victory. Kerri Kirkpatrick and Tina McLeod bulged the twine for the Bolts. Kathleen Bevan, Denise Stairs and Kasey Shoebridge assisted on the goals. There will be no ladies hockey this Friday night. Play resumes November 30, same place, same time. Watch for league stats in next weeks edition of the New Tanner. Acton Ladies Hockey Cougars edge Devils Lightning blanks Sharks After the loss of their head coach due to health issues, the Bearcats thought their season was shot. Having only nine players, short four or five that usually make up a full team, the girls went into the season with a lets just have fun attitude. Cory Tennier, a senior boys bas- ketball player, stepped up to take over the position of head coach, with Mrs. Boychuk taking the position of Staff Teacher for the team. Adam Taggart, a new teacher to Acton High School, and T.J. Fry, a student mentor, also stepped up to help out. After losing the first two games of the season, the girls completely turned around and finished the season at 5-6. They lost their first playoff game to Bishop Reding after leading the first three quarters. Having beat the other two Halton A division teams, they remained in OFSSA con- tention. Their next hurdle would be to get through GHAC (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference) against a team representing Ham- ilton-Wentworth. Yet, no A division team could declare themselves eligible to play against the Bearcats, which gave them the right to move on to a playoff game against ROPSSAA (Region of Peel). They played this game against Brampton Christian Acade- my last Wednesday, Nov. 14 in Acton. The Bearcats took an easy win of 34-16, with the combination of Erica Mills and Victoria Duffield leading the way. This win was the final step to OFSSA, and the girls were on their way to Port Hope for the tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Sixteen teams from across Ontario will be at the tournament to compete, and this is only the third time in history that Acton will be represented. Congratulations to the Bearcat girls, coaches and staff. Good-luck! Bearcats off to OFSSA by Justina Pembleton After playing great back- to-back games against the two top teams, short several players, the Acton Tanners (Staying Alive Fit- ness) Midget team met up with the Brampton Battalion in Brampton on Saturday, Nov. 17, with almost a full complement of players. Unfortunately the Tanners didnt bring their A game with them to the Memorial Arena. Instead, they brought with them a tired looking team that failed to execute on several great plays. The first period of play saw the two teams quite evenly matched until the final min- utes when Brampton dug the puck out from beneath the goalie to put the Battalions first on the board. The Tanners continued to struggle in the second period often allowing Brampton first rights to the puck. Brampton capitalized on this lethargy by popping in another couple of goals. With the score 3 to 0 at the start of the third period, there was still hope the Tanners could pull out of their slump. The Battalion thought differ- ently. Just a few seconds into the third period, Brampton put away their fourth and final goal of the game. The game ended with few penalties and less goals for the Tanners as Brampton skated to a 4-0 win. Tanner goalie Andrew Cheeseman played an great game in net, keeping the game close.
