THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2008 17THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 200816 By Dave Pratt April 29 and 30 was the final weekend of hockey for more than 400 Acton House League Hockey Association players held at the Acton Arena. Each player had their final game followed by a banquet and awards ceremony. It was a thrilling weekend with three of the six Championship games needing overtime to decide the winner. Atom Championship The weekend started with the Atom Division Champion- ship between the Acton Fire Fighters Association and Rallis Burger. Rallis Mathew Field opened the scoring in the first period with assists to Mitchell Turton and Justin Cheng. The lead was short lived as the Fire FightersTroy Naminik tied the game just over one minute later with helpers to Owen Jubenville and Julianne Vlasic. Rallis opened a 2 goal lead in the second period with goals from Taylor Leonard and Field. Assists went to Mathew Dawkins on the second goal, another one to Turton on the third and to Michael Muir who assisted on both. Naminik brought the Fire Fighters back within one before the end of the second period from Reilly Constable and Martin Pejic. Early in the third period after a hard shot from Jubenville and the save made by Rallis goalten- der Connor Kowalik, the puck lay loose for a second and was banged in the net by Shannon Oulton to tie the score. The play went back and forth with great goaltending at both ends. In the overtime period Fire Fighter goalie Bradley Karat made a huge save on a breakaway by Field which motivated the Fire Fighters as Naminik completed the hat trick with the winner at 4:11 of the overtime period giving the Championship to the Fire Fighters 4 3. ACTON SPORTS COMPANY 352 Queen St. E. Acton (Prosperity One Plaza) 519-853-1234 OPENING APRIL 7 Acton House Leagues Day of Champions with several players lighting up the scoreboard for both teams. Daniel Nascimento and Yaw Oseimensah both scored two goals to help give Jescan Power the early lead. Eramosa Phys- iotherapy could not recover the deficit despite a couple of late goals from Caleb Downs. Daniel Nascimento finished the game with a hat trick and had some exciting breakaways including a wraparound attempt. Other Jescan goals went to Tristan Wright and Michael Holmes. Eramosa called a time out with two minutes remaining to try and regroup and pull out the win but the Jescan team would not be denied and won 7 5. Other Eramosa goals went to Ethan Krusky, Luke Miehm and Ryan McAskill. Novice Championship The Novice Championship showcased the team from Mac- Millans versus Maxan Drywall. MacMillans team came our fir- ing on all cylinders and quickly took a two goal lead with both goals from Tanner Canary with an assist to Roman Pryszlak. The Maxan team responded with a hat trick from Cameron Hampton with helpers to Leah Vlasic, Stephanie Parsons, Noah St. Denis and Connor Fagan. Maxan took a two goal lead at the beginning of the second period with a goal by Fagan from Darren Vanheldon and Vlasic. Before the end of the second Canary brought his team back within one goal. Chances were exchanged at both ends of the ice but both goaltenders, Griffin Cunneyworth and Owen Ferguson could not be beat. Late in the third Canary took matters into his own hands and scored two more goals within twenty- two seconds to put his team ahead for good and MacMillans was victorious 5 - 4. Midget Championship The final game on Saturday had Endzone Sports versus X Marks the Fitness Spot. This was a hard battle with the Fitness Spot team in the lead the majority of the game lead by three goals by Ian Reid. Endzone would not be outdone as Sean Terry scored three of his own goals to keep it close. With the game winding down coach Deb Mills pulled the goalie in the last minute of the game for the extra attacker to have Garrett Nuttel tie the game with 8.5 seconds remaining on the clock. Scoring chances were exchanged through the overtime period with solid goaltending at both ends of the ice. Endzone prevailed as Terry notched his fourth of the game to give the victory to the Endzone team 6 5. Peewee Championship The Peewee Champion- ship was a goaltending battle between R/M Constructions Mark Crha and Acton Precasts Josh Karat. Ironically these two goalies share the tending duties for the Peewee Select Team. The game was a tight checking affair and it was not until the five minute mark of the third period when Precasts Mitchell Griffiths scored with an assist to Liam Goddem. R/M team carried much of the remainder of the play but could not get one past Karat. The games fate was sealed when Griffiths scored his second of the game with under twenty seconds to play. Simon McNally and Colin Mac- Donald assisted. Karat posted the shutout as Acton Precast won 2 0. Bantam Championship The final Championship of the weekend was the Bantam Division Rons Burner Service versus Godfathers Pizza. The first period was played cautious- ly with neither team generating many scoring opportunities. Rons Burner Jonathan Porty opened the scoring in the second with help from Zac Payne but less than a minute later Godfa- thers Tyler Colby tied the score from Paul Kutasienski and Erika Stokes. Before the end of the second Rons Burner took the lead again with another goal by Porty assisted by Indiana White. Early in the third Clay- ton Black gave Rons Burner a two goal lead from Dylan and Basil Payne. The two goal deficit seemed to motivate Godfathers as Colby scored his second goal and Jordan Luceri tied the score with less than five minutes left in the game. In the overtime period with Godfathers Kutasienski in the penalty box, James Seymour scored a short handed goal to give the Godfathers team the Championship in overtime 4 3. Redeeming themselves, after losing the last two years, the Police team came out on top and the end of the game filled with fun and pranks. The score is irrelavant as everyone, including the large crowd, enjoyed themselves. (Police 11 - AHS 7). - Tracey Gardner photo
