Throughout the month several ac- tivities and events are being planned across the district. Youth week is dedicated to the celebration of youth and their active participation in the com- munity. Every day youth are involved in meaningful activities during their discretionary time and this is an opportunity to honour their involvement. The intention of national youth week is to recog- nize the good work that goes on in communities with and for the youth of Canada. It is a great op- portunity to meet the youth in a positive environment share their successes with them and support youth development. Some of the scheduled events include: Halton Hills Mayors Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC), is sponsoring youth recognition awards on may 1st, highlighting the contributions of youth to our community. On May 4th they host a very popular coffee house at the Starlight Cafn Acton where the youth will share their musical talents; in addition their artistic tal- ents will be displayed at the town of Halton Hills over the course of the week. May 6 thru 8th at Christ the King Catholic School, George- town, the SmartRisk Heroes Road Show hits the stage. Approxi- mately 4000 high school students will experience a huge theatrical production with state-of-the-art concert style sound and lighting. The upbeat positive messages of taking smart risks to prevent injury will be delivered in a can- did live talk hosted by an injury survivor. Seven out of ten youth who died in Canada last year died as a result of a preventable injury. One message heard is perhaps one life saved. An evening show will be available to the community on May 7th. Check out www.smartrisk.ca. On May 24th the youth of Acton are hosting a fun day at Prospect Park with lots of exciting activities being planned. Information can be found at: www.chance4change.blogspot.com. This is a great opportunity for youth to be involved in making their community a place they are proud to belong to. Local bands, comedians and artists will be showcased during this event. On May 24th a Risk Watch Safety Blitz will take place at Georgetown District Christian School.
