When police went to a Churchill Road South apartment at 3:58 p.m. to answer a tenants call about a man exhibiting bizarre behaviour, the man threatened them with several knives. The uniform officers backed off, set up a perimeter and called in the tactical res- cue unit to negotiate with the man who threatened several officers with the butcher knife and threw several steak knives off his balcony, narrowly missing officers on the ground. The standoff continued until the armed man left his apartment and was subdued and disarmed by police in the hallway. He was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, five counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of breach of probation. Police did not know why he was on probation or what his initial bizarre behaviour entailed. The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing on Monday in Milton. Staff at the Ferryland, Newfoundland clinic where Dr. Alkadhimi practiced family medicine for three years said they are sad to see the easy going, friendly physician leave, but the two over-worked physicians at the Acton Medical Clinic who have been holding down the fort in Dr. Vanderbents absence are very pleased, accord- ing to Haltons physician recruitment co-ordinator, Angela Sugden-Praysner. Dr. Alkadhimi had looked at other locations in Ontario, but he was given a warm welcome by both physicians when he toured Acton in June, and he wanted to take over a large patient load, as opposed to coming to a community Continued on Page 2 FACES OF ACTON: Nicole Bijas smile reflects the joy she feels as she gets her face painted up by Caitlin Rivers at the Leathertown Festival Sunday past.
