To the Editor, Habitat for Humanity Halton is a community-based and non-profit organization that is building three homes in Georgetown. Our mission is to break the poverty cycle by giv- ing a hand up to residents by providing a means to affordable housing. This is accomplished through generous donations from sponsors and the hard work of volunteers. There is an acute need for more volunteers to act as crew leaders. HFHH will provide the training. All we need is your time and enthusiasm. Crew leaders are asked to direct and organize a small group of volunteers to com- plete specific tasks. Building experience, although an as- set, isnt mandatory. Up to now, most of the volunteers either work and or live in Oakville and Burlington. Very few are from Halton Hills yet these homes will be benefiting our neighbours and our community. I have seen a lot of public spirit and involvement from this community in the past and would love to see more locals come out and sup- port this effort. Please visit www.habi- tathalton.ca to meet the three build families and to volunteer your precious but desperately needed time. Dan Poirier Acton Habitat needs help I just finished reading Ange- la Tylers article, Check-out clerks mystify me. I am a cashier at a local Acton store. When we hold the twenty up we are looking in the white area at the bottom for the out- line of a picture of the Queen. It is very difficult to see this unless you hold it up to the light. We are constantly told to make sure we check all 20s, 50s and 100s. Most stores do not accept 50s or 100s because these are the ones that are most commonly fake. They also seem to be easier to make. We do not check the 5s or 10s much because counterfeiters cannot be bothered to make those. There is not much money in that. About the credit cards, a lot of people will put see photo ID on the back of the card. Im sorry that the clerk didnt know what to do but you may find that these store experience a lot of turnover so sometimes you may get a clerk who does not know what to so. It is a learning experience. Also, someone usually is not going to use a credit card to buy just a few things. If it is stolen they will use it for all that they can. The more money spent the more likely it is that a clerk will as for ID. The glass was not broken, just damaged. RUNAWAY Between 8pm on the Sept. 13 and 9:45am on Sept. 14 damage was sustained to a culvert, mail box and rural fire number pole on Churchill Road North by an unknown vehicle. Damage is estimated at $350. EARLY RISER At 7:41am on September 13, a person contacted Halton Regional police after making observations about a vehicle and driver. Police were able to stop the vehicle at Queen Street and Longfield Road and subsequently charged Kenneth Lahey of Main Street with impaired driving. CYCLE CIRUIT: The new sport track at AHS cannot have bicycles, skateboards, or roller blades as they would ruin the surface. So the organizers of the Terry Fox Run, last Sunday, set up an alternate 0.15km circuit in the parking lot of AHS. Here we see cyclists George Henderson and Lloyd Smallwood escort a pack of energetic young bikers around the circuit. - Ken Baker photo
