An informal survey of Ac- ton businesses shows that for some, things have never been better. From the people that Ive talked to, we seem to be holding our own, which is really nice, said Nancy Wilkes, chair of the Acton BIA (Business Improvement Area) and owner of Acton Optical. Ive been very fortunate half way through Novem- ber, I had already passed (the amount of business) I did a year ago November, Wilkes said, adding she expects her business will increase even more now that she has an eye doctor at her Mill Street location. Wilkes said she thinks that BIA members will win because of the level of cus- tomer service they provide. When people are watch- ing their money, they want to shop where they feel secure Four significant outbreaks of mumps in the past year including one in Ontario prompted Halton Health Department officials to partner with local doctors and Sheridan College to offer the mumps vaccine in com- munity and on-campus clinics. The campaign is aimed at 18 to 25 year olds the Ontario outbreak, which resulted in over 400 cases was mainly among uni- versity and college student populations in the Oxford County area. The province is offering a mumps-con- taining vaccine given as MMR combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to all students attending post-secondary insti- tutions. Students who have received only one dose of MMR vaccine will be offered a second dose of the vaccine because they are the individuals who have an increased risk of mumps. The mumps immunization catch-up cam- paign runs until March 2009. The province will provide $5,000 for the campaign and reimburse Halton $8.50 per dose.
