Along with Carr, the mayor and regional councillors will be available to answer questions residents may have or provide them with information about Halton Regions program and services. Chair Carr, the mayor and regional councillors will be at the Halton Region booth on the following dates and times: Georgetown Fall Fair Saturday, Sept 12 from 2-3pm, Acton Fall Fair Saturday, Sept 19 from 2-3pm, Milton Fall Fair Saturday, Sept 26 from 2-3pm. As members of Council, it is important for us to hear directly from the people we represent, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. The fall fairs are a great opportunity to meet with residents face-to-face to hear what they have to say and to answer their questions. Search for Miss Acton at Fair pageant Friday, Sept. 18 By Frances Niblock Personable, quick wit- ted, friendly and an Acton booster. Those are some of the main characteristics that the judges for the Miss Acton pageant will be looking for in contestants at the 47th an- nual contest that takes place on September 18 at the Ac- ton Fall Fair. During her one-year reign, Miss Acton represents the Acton Agricultural Society at various community events and at Ontario fair associa- tion events. I have four confirmed (contestants) right now which is a very nice number. Usually we dont have that many confirmed two weeks before the event, so that shows me that there is a lot of interest this year, pageant chair Natalie Tuitman said on Monday, adding that the girls who have signed up so far have said they are look- ing forward to the experience and to representing Acton. Tuitman said in a pre-pa- geant interview the judges will look for contestants who carry themselves well, can easily engage in conversa- tion and are approachable. They will look for some- one who is at ease when approached by the public, someone who is poised, in- terested in Acton and able to put others at ease, Tuitman said. Contestants meet with pa- geant organizers and judges on the Wednesday and Thurs- day before the pageant for a makeup demonstration, inter- views, and a run through of their speeches and a chance to check out the stage in the Dufferin Centre where the pageant will be held. During the pageant, the contestants are introduced to the crowd while their biographies are being read, they walk the stage wearing business attire and a glamour look and answer questions from the judges. Tuitman, a runner-up in the 1995 pageant, said it was a great learning experi- ence that allowed her to gain confidence and self esteem, learn more about the com- munity and make a new set of friends that she might not have met. Tuitman said while the contestants do dress up with elaborate hair and makeup, the event is not a beauty pa- geant. What we want is the beauty personality. We want the girl who can talk well in a crowd we dont call it a beauty pageant, its a con- test and we want a winner who can represent Acton the best, Tuitman said, adding unlike some other fairs in Ontario that have a con- test for a fair ambassador, theres no move to open the pageant to males. Tuitman said that once again local merchants have been very generous with the prizes that theyve donated for the contestants. For the first time, the Agricultural Society sent out requests to local merchants and businesses for donations, instead of each committee approaching businesses in- dividually. The reigning Miss Acton, Justine Martin, will not be at the pageant to turn over her crown and robe she is currently in Switzerland going to school as an ex- change student, so her first runner-up, Rachel Moore, will handle the duties of the out-going Miss Acton. The pageant is open to females aged 16 to 22 who attend Acton High School, or live in the Ac- ton, Limehouse, Ballinafad or Rockwood area. Tuitman said they would accept entries until the Wednesday, September 16 pre-pageant meeting at the Dufferin Centre in Prospect Park.
