Key message regarding the flue season was that this year its different. The H1N1 flu virus is expected to be circulating in the community in addition to the seasonal flu virus that circulates every year. We are taking this issue very seriously, said Halton Region Chair, Gary Carr. Health Department staff are working closely with com- munity partners such as the school boards, hospitals and municipalities as well as the provincial and the federal governments. Practising proper infection control remains the most ef- fective method of preventing illness. This includes wash- ing your hands frequently with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sani- tizer, coughing or sneezing into your sleeve, keeping commonly touched surfaces clean and disinfected, and staying home from work or school when you are sick. This year, it truly is a different flu season. Exten- sive planning has occurred over the past few months to prepare for the anticipated second wave of H1N1 flu, said Dr. Bob Nosal. Cur- rently we are also planning for mass immunization clin- ics for H1N1 flu, in addition to clinics for seasonal flu. We are also working with hospitals and primary care providers as they develop contingency plans for flu centres. For more information on the H1N1 flu virus or sea- sonal flu, please contact Halton Region by dialing 311, or by calling 905-825- 6000, 1-866-442-5866, TTY 905-827-9833, or visit www. halton.ca. BEFORE AND AFTER: Looking just a little like sad Santa, Councillor Jon Hurst receives the first trim- mings from Mayor Rick Bonnette (who donated an extra $100 for the privilege) as Monica Galway of Profile Hair Salon looks on prior to the official shave down to the wood. Jon also lost his eyebrows, thanks to a generous donation as well as his chest hair. If you see brave Jon be sure to shake his hand and thank him The whole event raised, including $900 from the BIA, over $9,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Jon is also looking for anyone who knits wool caps......winter is coming! - Ken Baker photo RIBBON CUTTING: Edna Gordon cuts the ribbon to officially start the annual Terry Fox Run at Acton High School last Sunday. Kudos go to the Acton community for raising $30,500: $21,500 from the run and $9,000 from Jon Hursts head shaving. - Ken Baker photo
