Fall Fair just needs some good weather for its 96th edition By Frances Niblock Each year organizers of the Acton Fall Fair hope it will be bigger and better than the previous year and this year for the 96th edition it looks like the event, billed as the Best Little Fair in Ontario, will be bigger and better, weather permitting. There are more horses registered for the horse shows, cattle entries are up over last year, theres an increase in interest for the tractor pulls, an enlarged area for the Homecraft ex- hibits and a larger beer tent that should eliminate some of the long lineups. Jim Richmond, the publi- city and advertising manager for the Acton Agricultural Society, said a dedicated crew of volunteers is put- ting the fi nishing touches on turning Prospect Park into a fair ground. Were expecting an in- crease in entries for the heavy horse pull on Friday night because it has been sanctioned by the Ontario Heavy Horse Pullers As- sociation so everyone that comes and has a horse in the pull earns points towards a yearly championship, Rich- mond said on Monday. He said that there are more entries this year for the 4H cattle show and pre-registra- tions show an increase in all of the horse categories. The beer tent is being en- larged theres going to be more space in the beer tent, or the Spot in the Park, hope- fully we can eliminate the lineups of people that wait to get in on Friday and Sat- urday night, he said, adding that the beer tent revenue is important to the fair, along with revenue from the mid- way and entrance fees. Richmond said they ex- pect an increase in the number of entries in the mini garden tractor pull on Saturday night. He said they have 72 entries for the fair parade on Saturday includ- ing bands, fl oats and theres been some interest in kids decorating their bicycles and taking part in the parade. As of Monday, seven girls were entered in the 46th edition of the Miss Acton pageant that takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday night after the official opening of the fair, featuring the Acton Cit- izens Band, at 7 p.m. The Knights of Columbus, helped by staff at Actons Scotiabank, will handle se- curity and the gate for the weekend and Agricultural Society members will be on hand all weekend long to ensure that the fair runs smoothly. It takes a lot of volunteer hours to put on the fair. We have a lot of volunteers but we always need more and I can guarantee that any- one who pays $10 and joins the Society will be able to work as many hours as they want, doing something that they want to do, Richmond said. Richmond said they ex- pect record numbers of babies and toddlers at the ever-popular Baby Show on Saturday afternoon and because of very generous donations from Acton mer- chants, each entry in the contest will receive a gift. The best part of the fair for me is the heavy horse pulls on Friday night the horses are so eager to pull when they hear the clunk of the chain on the pull sled, Richmond said adding the fair is a huge social event with many former Acton residents coming back to catch up with family and friends. For Education Day on Friday, approximately Continued on Page 7
