OT, the third seed at this years OFSAA tournament, will play its two games tomorrow (Thursday). The Red Devils will face Sydenham at 9:30 a.m., then take on Ingersoll DCI at 1:15 p.m. OTs round-robin schedule concludes Friday with an 11 a.m. contest against Sir John A. Macdonald. The top two teams in each of the four pools will move on to the quarter-finals, which will be played Friday at 2 p.m. Semifinals are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by the bronze-medal game (11:30 a.m.) and gold-medal contest (12:30 p.m.). The Red Devils qualified for OFSAA last week with a 5-0 victory over Hamiltons St. Thomas More in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final. OT won the Halton championship two days earlier, defeating the Loyola Hawks 7-0 in the regional final. Including playoffs, OT is 14-0 this year, outscoring its opponents 62-1. The Red Devils earned bronze at OFSAA in 2006. Haltons entry has won a provin- cial medal each of the past four years. OT third seed at OFSAA field hockey Less may really be more, at least as far as the Oakville Blades are concerned. When the defending Provincial Junior Hockey League champions have taken more shots than their opponents this season, they are below .500. Six of their nine losses this year have come in games where they held an advantage in shots of a dozen or more. Meanwhile, when Oakville has been out- shot, it has won three of those five contests. Those statistics held true last weekend. Despite firing a com- bined 76 shots at the Orangeville Flyers and Stouffville Spirit, the Blades lost both games. In its lone win of the weekend, Oakville was outshot 39-33 by the Buffalo Jr. Sabres. Maybe these stats are meaningless. After all, like Homer Simpson once said, you could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true. Or maybe these numbers make sense. Blades head coach Mark Jooris feels his team might actually be shooting too much, set- tling for the outside shot instead of making the extra pass to create a high-percentage chance. Ive talked to the guys... theres plays that I find weve got guys who are a guaranteed goal instead of a possible goal, and were not exe- cuting those plays, said Jooris. Id rather have 20 good selective shots and real good scoring opportunities. When youre dominating play and not being rewarded on the scoreboard (Oakville has been held to three goals or less in 11 of 18 games), frustration can also set in. Then if the other team gets one, you might panic a little bit and then you open up (defensively), Jooris added. Oakvilles first loss of the weekend came Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, when the Orangeville Flyers scored the first four goals of the contest and held on for a 4-3 win. The Blades trailed 2-0 after the first period (despite outshooting Orangeville 14-5) and 4-1 after two (when they enjoyed a 25-9 advantage on the shot clock). Braedan Russell, Brandon Denham and Mark Corbett had the Oakville goals. Saturday, the Blades rebounded to defeat Buffalo 5-2 at Sixteen Mile. Mark McGowan scored twice, while Josh Ranalli, Denham and Russell also found the net. Daniel Savelli stopped 37 of 39 shots for the victory. Sunday afternoon in Stouffville, the Blades got goals from Brandon Johnston and McGowan to tie the game 2-2 in the second period. The Spirit, however, scored the final three goals of the contest, including an empty netter with 11 seconds to play, to prevail 5-2. The Blades (9-8-1) are back in action this weekend with a pair of games on the slate.
