- The Bronte Historical Society dates the building to about 1840 and they know the house was built by the Bray family of stone dredged from Lake Ontario called Dundas shale. A link to the BHS photograph of the family at the house is provided for your further information.
Stonehooking to bring these rock slabs ashore was an early industry along the north shoreline, for use in construction. Stoneboats were the flat bottomed sleds used to haul stone over short distances and the restaurant more recently housed partially in the old house is named "Stoneboats".
In March 2006, fire in the Stoneboats restaurant destroyed much of the building which was then reconstructed/rebuilt.
In 2020, the address is a restaurant on the southeast side of Bronte Road, south side of Marine Drive in the village of Bronte, a block north of Lake Ontario. The old one-story building now has a lovely windowed addition for restaurant patron seating. The later two-story addition is gone.
