- Description
- Elizabeth, Amanda, and Jennie Oakley. This photograph was taken in Hamilton, Ontario, most likely just before two of the sisters left with their families to look for opportunities in the newly opening territories of the western United States.
Amanda married John A. Foreman, Jr. in Oakville on April 29, 1847. They were married by her uncle, the Reverend John Oakley, a Baptist minister. She divorced John for his adultery in Topeka in 1866. She was not in good health and died October 10, 1869. Her sister, Elizabeth, took her children.
Elizabeth taught school in Oakville, Ontario before her marriage to William Henry Williams on September 3, 1860. William's parents were also Oakville residents, Horace D. and Loretta Williams. They all followed the Foreman family from Oakville to Kansas and in 1870, were living together in Grant Township, Manhattan, Riley County.
Jennie Dean Oakley taught school before marrying Freeman Bell. It is probable that they met and married in Davenport, Iowa. They lived first in Leavenworth, Kansas and three children were born there, the two sons died in 1878 and their daughter, Jennie Dean Bell, survived to move with them to Denver, Colorado. Freeman had worked as bookkeeper in the Leavenworth Prison and moved to take the position of head bookkeeper for the J. Jay Joslin Dry Goods Co. in Denver. Jennie is buried in Denver's Fairmont Cemetery, Freeman died May 15, 1900 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. - Notes
- Since the photograph is taken in Hamilton when the three sisters were together, it must have been taken before Amanda and Jennie left for Kansas in January of 1858.
