At the Canadian National Exhibition last week, Milton's noted breeder Jos. Telfer took the majority of prizes for Hackneys. Another Miltonian, C.E. Hill, got second prize for his two year old stallion, Halton King.
In the large family contests at the CNE, the family Hayward of Hornby won first prize. "Early to bed and Early to rise, and lots of Jersy milk" was the smiling way that Walter Hayward described his fine family. "And don't forget they were raised in the country" said a friend. On a 165 acre farm in halton live these 11 children and their parents. The eldest is just 20 and the baby a dear little girl of five months who is the "joy" of the family. Joy would have been entered in the baby contest, but the Haywards are not selfish and feel that two first prizes are enough for one year. They are members of the United Church and the children are regular attenders at sunday school. "They are all just as good as they look" said their father. "Edith, the eldest girl, has stopped going to school and is at home helping mother, but the rest who are old enough are all at school and doing well. After they decided to enter the competition, Mrs. Hayward and Edith worked on new dresses for all the girls, with the result that they had real "made in Canada" clothes on, and hats as well of the same dainty coloured floral crepe. Miss Edith, aged 20, won a gold mesh bag, having been ajudged the prettiest over 16 in the big family contests."
