- The charred remains of George Kennedy’s mill, which operated beside the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.) tracks at Trafalgar Rd, Hornby, just east of the station. The station is visible in the background. (The C.P.R. has only a picture of the station taken in 1898 in their archives.)
From Frank Chisholm’s memories, April, 1995: “The Grand Trunk Railway came through about 1877, and in 1879 it became the C.P.R. At one time Senator McKenzie was proposing a railroad from Oakville to Guelph, but it fell through. They never got it built. Senator McKenzie’s Daughter married Victor Chisholm, a lawyer from Milton. Senator McKenzie’s mother was a Crawford, and they lived on Ken Ella’s place (north side of Steeles at the 6th line). Senator McKenzie’s father built the store in Hornby (later Brigden’s house, and now a gas station.) William McKenzie was a grain dealer and, (as near as Frank could find out), he built the elevator at Hornby Station, which was later George Kennedy’s mill. Senator McKenzie had free travel on the railroads." - Notes
- Irene Saunders booklet, "As I Recall" ; Recollections of Years Gone By dates the mill fire in 1940 and states the Grand Trunk Railway first laid line through Hornby in 1871.
