- Description
- Jane was the daughter of John and Sarah Bell who had come from the Parish of Scotts Place and Drumquin in County Fermanagh in Ireland. They had previously left Scotland for Ireland, to avoid the Persecution of Dundee.
They settled on the west half of Lot 10, Concession 7, Nelson Township, Halton County. The Bells donated land for a school and the road is still called Bell School Line, Bell Street in Milton is named for Jane's brother, Absolam. The Bells also gave land for a Methodist church, later called Mountain Union Sunday School.
The marriage of John and Jane resulted in the large family named below here, and a very successful farm. "Sprucedale" was the family name for the 200 acre home farm on Lot 14, Concession 4, Trafalgar Township. First a log home was built, then a frame house and then in 1861, the beautiful brick house seen in the "Sprucedale Farm" records linked below the photo of Jane here.
The farm had its own shops: blacksmith, carpentry, machinery. Two large windmills and a large bank barn. Machinery and wooden water pumps were manufactured on site.
The Thompson Road house was demolished in 1991. You can view photos of the home taken by the family during the fight to save the historic house by clicking on "Groups of Related Records" "Sprucedale Farm, Dixon Family". - Subject(s)
