- Description
- A series of 4 photographs. The first 3 show dresses worn by the daughters of William and Maud Speck in the 4th photograph, which is of the family seated in their buggy with baby Audrey. Edna and Myrtle are standing in front of the buggy. They are in front of the Speck family home at Highway #122 (now Royal Windsor Drive), just south of Sheridan, Trafalgar Township, where the Ford Heating Plant is now located.
The 3 dresses are hand sewn, each a bit different. Eldest daughter Myrtles' has pin tucks around the neck with a square lace insert below. A square collar of a laced ruffle makes it a "big girl" dress. There are 3 tucks in the skirt and a generous hem to be let down as she grows but these remain decorative, not used. The pattern on the sleeves echoes the collar.
Edna's dress similarily has the tucks and deep hem allowing for her growth, again unused. The bodice of her dress is net with a lacy, pin tucked chemise underneath.
Baby Audrey's dress is simpler but still nicely finished with tucks and lace.
The dresses are now in the care of Oakville Museums. - Notes
- William and Maud married in 1902. Myrtle was born in 1903. Around the time of their marriage, William bought the farm just south of Sheridan at Lot 1 Con 2 SDS Trafalgar Township. Much of the land was sold to Sheridan Nurseries in 1913.
