Marriage Notes: SOCIAL AND PERSONAL (Herbert Inglehart's scrapbook) June 15, 1904

On the beautiful, sunshining afternoon of Wednesday last, June 15th, a most interesting event took place at "Oakhurst", Merton, the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Inglehart, when their daughter, Lottie Eleanor was united in marriage to D. Frank Ford, of Omagh. Promptly at two-thirty, to the strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March, played by Miss Louise McLaren, of Toronto, the bridal party took their places on the lawn, beneath an evergreen arch, hung with a magnificent margeurite bell.

The ceremony was conducted by Rev. George Abbs of Trenton, uncle of the bride, assisted by Rev. C.R. Morrow of Omagh and Rev. J. Culp of Palermo, Ontario. The queenly bride, who was given away by her father, looked the emblem of daintiness, being dressed in white voile, over white satin trimmed with rich oriental lace, wearing the customary bridal veil and orange blossoms and carrying a shower bouquet of cream roses.

Miss Ida A. Ford, sister of the groom, made a charming bridesmaid and wore blue voile over blue satin trimmed with cream oriental lace.

The groom was most ably supported and his interests were most attentively looked after by Walter Inglehart, of Inglehart and Garner, of Palermo, Ontario. About ninety guests were present from Winnipeg, Ottawa, Trenton, Toronto, Cleveland, Woodstock, Galt, Chatham, Orangeville, Brampton, Oakville, Milton, Omagh, and the immediate vicinity.

The presents, which were numerous and costly, formed a beautiful display and bespoke the extreme popularity of the young couple. The groom's present to the bride was a handsome blouse set, inlaid with pearls; to the bridesmaid, he gave a beautiful triple opal ring, and to the groomsman, a pair of gold cufflinks, while the latter presented the bridesmaid with a pretty gold locket.

After congratulations, the wedding dinner was served in the spacious dining room, which was tastefully arranged with margeurites, ferns and smilax, by a bevy of most becomingly gowned young ladies and their gallants, while all was enlivened by music furnished by young artists, from Omagh, Toronto and The Plains.

After two hours of feasting, toasts and speeches, the merry party drove to Bronte station. Mr. and Mrs. Ford will visit the World's Fair at St. Louis, Chicago, and western Canadian points of interest, and on their return will reside at "Archway Place",Omagh, where their friends most heartily wish them a long life of usefulness and unbounded happiness.

Notes
"Oakhurst" was a bit south of Palermo and Dundas Street, and a bit north of the old Trafalgar Township center of Merton. Usually, the family considered themselves to be part of Palermo as the "Dundas Highway" was very much the focus for Trafalgar Township people.

Merton was a small hamlet in the old Trafalgar Township, centred just south of Oakhurst. The Merton area (Lots 26-35 2SDS Trafalgar) was settled as early as 1810. The first settlers were David Utter, Joseph Smith, William Bates, Cornelius Tipps and Henry Cale. The community adopted the name "Merton" when the post office opened in 1852. The name was likely chosen to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar and Lord Nelson as other local villages had chosen Bronte and Palermo. The post office remained open until 1917 when it was replaced by rural mail service from Bronte.

Merton boundaries were present day Burloak Drive to 3rd Line, the railway tracks near Lake Ontario north to Upper Middle Road. The intersection of Bronte Road (originally called Station Road) and the Queen Elizabeth Way (formerly Lower Middle Road) was the centre of the Merton area.
