He received a Governor Generals commendation for his work. The former Peterborough and St. Marys resident witnessed atrocities, was shot at regularly and carried the stress of his job on his shoulders. He says it nearly cost him his life. Two years after leaving the Canadian Forces at the age of 43, Newcombe suf- fered three heart attacks. He believes post-traumatic stress disorder caused his marriage to fail, his health to decline and his life to fall apart piece by piece. Newcombe now 49 and living in London is busy rebuilding his shat- tered life and strengthening his relation- Sometimes the war begins after the shooting ends They served in the Second World War and Korea, in peacekeeping missions and in Afghanistan. They offered up the ulti- mate sacrifice, putting their lives on the line for a better world.
