- Description
- The Trafalgar Township Hall was first built in 1847 for use as a store, and turned into the township hall in 1880. Links to other photographs of the old, two-storey brick building are in this record for your further information.
The original building stood at 6th Line and the Dundas Highway, on the southeast corner facing Dundas, aligned along 7th Line (now known as Trafalgar Road).
The newer building, as you can see in this photograph, sits on an angle, facing to the intersection. It was erected in 1949.
In addition to being the home of the area municipal council, t served as a community center for the rural population, and hosted dances or other events such as Don and Donna McAlpine's wedding reception in 1953.
The site is still marked with a plaque describing the hall. - Notes
- The correct name of this hall is "Trafalgar Memorial Hall". The name was amended and a plaque was commissioned to honour soldiers who had died in World War II hung in the Hall for many years - it is now at the archives of the Trafalgar Township Historical Society (linked here FYI), and a replica is at the Trafalgar War Memorial.
Historical research for the records of the Trafalgar Memorial Hall have been provided by Town of Oakville Heritage Planner, Carolyn Van Sligtenhorst and Michelle Knoll, Trafalgar Township Historical Society. - Inscriptions
