The 1939-45 Star - Awarded for (minimum) 6 months of service in operational command between Sept 3rd 1939 and Sept 2nd 1945. It was immediately awarded if the individual received a gallantry medal or a “Mention in Despatches”, as well as if the service period ended in death or wounding. The France Germany Star - Awarded for service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Germany between June 6th 1944 (D-Day) and May 8th, 1945.

The Defence Medal - Awarded for service in non-operational areas (eg; headquarters, training bases, or the Home Guard) between 1939 and 1945. The ribbon’s stripes represent the green land of Britain, cut by a stripe of flame. The black stripes represent the black-out.

Award for Voluntary Service - Granted to any persons who volunteered for active service for 18 months between Sept 3rd 1939 and March 1st 1947. The silver bar with the maple leaf at its centre was awarded for 60 days service outside Canada. On the obverse are seven marching figures, representing men and women of the army, air force, navy, and nursing corps.

The War Medal, 1939 – 1945 - The War Medal was awarded to all full-time personnel of the armed forces and merchant marines for serving (minimum) 28 days between 03 September 1939 and 02 September 1945. In the Merchant Navy, the 28 days must have been served at sea. The reverse shows a lion standing on a double headed dragon. The dragon’s heads are an eagle and a dragon, representing the enemy in Germany and Japan.
