ADVERTORIAL The Halton Regional Police Association held a fundraising event in support of Autism Ontario Halton Chapter whose mission is to ensure that each individual with Autism is provided the means to achieve quality of life as a valued member of society. The event was held October 20 at Monaghans Sports Pub & Grill, Oakville where over 250 attendees enjoyed great food, music of three volunteer bands, all members were from police services. The evening included a ra e draw with amazing prizes all donated by businesses in the Halton Region. Wal-Mart Canada, Trafalgar and Dundas contributed a signi cant monetary donation to bring the total funds raised to $7,885.90. A portion of the funds will support the Annual Childrens Christmas Party especially designed to accommodate the sensitivies of children with Autism and their families. The balance of the funds will support the ongoing programs o ered by Autism Ontario Halton Chapter. The event began in 1998 when Walter Bucci, Inspector of Emergency Services, recognized the gap between need and funds available for Autism support and awareness, as a result of its impact on a family member. At that time the incidence was 1:10,000 births now, just 12 years later, based on recent studies by Canadian researchers, the prevalence rate of Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is 1:110 births. Autism is currently the nations fastest growing developmental disorder. It is a complex disability that typically appears during the rst three years of life. It is the result of a neurological disorder that a ects the functioning of the brain which continues through adulthood and impacts the typical development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Individuals with autism nd it di cult to communicate with others and relate to the outside world. Autism Ontario Halton Chapter appreciates the strong support demonstrated by the Halton Regional Police Association, lead by Bruce Dickson and Cole Repta, in organizing the event and for everyone in the community that participated. All funds will be used to support individuals and families living with the day to day challenges of Autism.
