Over time this water becomes contaminated with tritium. Young said that as tritium decays it gives off beta radiation, which damages the mem- branes of conventional electrolysers. The electrolysers Tyne is already in the process of designing, however, are expected to be able to withstand the high doses of radi- ation produced by the reactor. This is significant as removing tritium from water prevents it from finding its way into lakes and streams. Removing this tritium also stops it from harming reactor operators, who otherwise may be exposed to it. After the tritium is removed from the water in a reactor, it is often stored until its half-life expires. It can also be used for its self-powered lighting properties in light bulbs, watches, firearm night sights, exit signs and a variety of other devices. Young said the success of the Tyne project would have considerable benefits. The sale of heavy water tritium-removal systems to existing CANDU reactors worldwide could mean Canadian export sales of more than $84 million. Young also presented Tyne Engineering President John Robinson with a Canadian Innovation Leader Certificate and said Tynes proven success record and commitment to creating jobs for Canadians were among the reasons the federal government is supporting the Oakville company. Robinson talked about his companys secret to success during his remarks. We try our best. We work hard. We do what we can and sometimes we come up with a winner and sometimes we dont. I think probably our success comes from continuing to try, he said. We, together with AECL (Atomic Energy Canada Limited)will come up with some equipment, which is capable of removing tri- tium from reactors, we believe, more effi- ciently and more cheaply and with smaller equipment than previously. We do think we have a winner. Robinson said the project would not only advance safety and ecology, but also Canadian competitiveness within the nuclear power industry. Tyne Engineering Vice President Vince Robinson said that thanks to the funding for the project, Tyne will be hiring at least 10-15 more people, as well as a number of consult- ants who will do contract work. He said Tyne will be looking to expand its workplace to accommodate these new arrivals. Founded in 1999 and currently employing 25 people in Oakville, Tyne Engineering designs and manufactures specialized instru- ments and equipment used in the nuclear industry and in the measurement and han- dling of tritium.
