Kitching then commanded the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, trained it and led it in the invasion of Normandy in July and August 1944. Under Kitching, the division took part in operations Totalize (Aug. 7-10, 1944) and Tractable (Aug. 14-16, 1944) and in the closing of the Falaise Gap (Aug. 17-21, 1944) the decisive engagement of the Battle of Normandy. Though some German forces escaped, the gap was closed, German losses were heavy and two days later Paris was liberated. According to Juno Beach Centre documents, Kitchings outfit was criti- cized for being too slow in making the junction with the U.S. troops, allowing German forces to escape. Kitching was relieved of his command of the divi- sion and appointed Brigadier General with 1st Canadian Corps. A short time later, Major-General Chris Vokes took over the 4th Canadian Armoured Division. This was not the only bond between Kitching and Vokes the latter of whose name is incorporated in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 486, General Chris Vokes Branch, Bronte. Both served as GOC of Central Command out of Oakvilles Ortona Barracks. Vokes died in Oakville on March 28, 1985. Both were involved in a fierce bat- tle over Christmas 1943 in the Italian town of Ortona the namesake of Oakvilles former Ortona Barracks. We smashed the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division and we gave the 1st German Parachute Division a mauling it will long remember. This was the signal flashed by Oakvilles Major- General Chris Vokes at Christmas 1943 from the rubble of the once pros- perous medieval Italian town on the Adriatic coast, that was, on Dec. 27, 1943 a shatter enemy stronghold, sur- rendered to Canadian troops under Vokes command.
