Thats because the triple-threat singer/dancer/actor is a cast member of the high-octane Toronto musical production of Rock of Ages at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Even though we only work three and a half hours a day its very demanding. We have to be so prepared physically, mentally. Its probably one of the most demanding shows Ive done and Ive done a lot of musi- cal theatre, Burton said. And the show rocks hard all the way through. Rock of Ages is a very hard show and when I say that I mean its hard singing, its all rock and the dancing is very hard danc- ing. Its been definitely a push for me just to be consistent every single week, Burton added. The St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School graduate is what is known as the swing in the show. She is an under- study for four female parts and on any given night has to perform any one of them. I play pretty much all the women of the show depending on whos out because every week theres so many injuries and sickness- es that go on. Im on quite a bit and I cover one of the main lead comedy parts which is Regina, she said. The musical comedy is a throwback to the 80s when glam rock was hot. The show features music by the likes of Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison and much more. It is about a girl, Regina, on a journey to save the Sunset Strip from developers trying to clean up its sex, drugs and rockn roll style. Since the show began at the start of sum- mer, Burton said she appeared in about 70 of the 200 or so shows. But this Thursday, Nov. 18 she will get a chance to perform as the headstrong woman, Regina, for the first time. Ive performed it in rehearsal and on stage with an empty audience but the 18th will actually be the first time that Ill be on with a full-house, Burton said. She sings her own songs. Shes basically a hippy, Granola-lover, really down-to-earth girl whos trying to save the Sunset Strip. Burton said Regina is her favourite role out of the four or so she does and is excited about the upcoming performance. She even invited some agents to come out and to watch her perform. Theres nerves obviously that happen too, but Ive prepared all summer and Im super ready to go on, she said. Currently the show is set to close mid- January so Burton hopes the role will help her get into more comedy work as well as in television and film. The show premiered in Los Angeles in 2006 and then it appeared off-Broadway and then in 2009 it hit New York Citys Broadway. Since then the show has spread to include Toronto, Melbourne in Australia and a US national tour. Furthermore movie rights have been sold to Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Burton said auditions for the Toronto show, produced by Mirvish Productions, Performer on Sunset Strip at Rock of Ages ROCKING HARD: Oakvilles Ashley Burton is dressed and ready to go as a waitress in the Mirvish Productions Rock of Ages in Toronto.
