St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School is aiming for a LEED silver designation. Guided by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, the school is heading into the final months of construction and one step closer to silver certification. The last phase in the Schools master building plan features an environmentally- friendly expansion designed by Levitt Goodman Architects Ltd. In March 2011 the new addition will open with multi- purpose classrooms, a dining hall/servery/ kitchen, music rooms, senior resource centre, conference room, student centre, gardens and a new playground. For more than 119 years St. Mildreds- Lightbourn School has been providing single gender education to young women, encouraging them to discover confidence in their abilities, be open to learning beyond the classroom, and become leaders in the community. Located at 1080 Linbrook Road, St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School is a charitable organization supported in its expansion through donations from members of their school and the Oakville community. The decision to incorporate LEED certification in the new construction at St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School was a significant investment in our natural world and ensures that girls will be provided with a healthy productive environment to learn and succeed, noted Jane Wightman, the Head of School. LEED is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School will be meeting silver LEED standards for the build through its use of a geothermal system; operable windows promoting solar heating and improved air quality; local, recycled and rapidly renewable materials to reduce greenhouse gases, solid waste and soil depletion; low- VOC paints and low-emitting carpeting to ensure good interior air quality; and water-efficient landscaping and plumbing fixtures, to conserve fresh water resources. With silver in sight, the school is getting ready to celebrate. While plans are in place for a private grand opening in April for the school community, visitors considering St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School for their daughter will be able to tour the new facilities in the latter part of March. To find out more visit the schools website at www.smls.on.ca. We are excited to celebrate this wonderful addition to the school, added Wightman, noting that achieving LEED silver certification will only add to the pride everyone already feels about this new environmentally-friendly space at the school.
