33 Friday , N ovem ber 19, 2010 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders junior boys volleyball coach Brendan Boyles biggest concern this year was complacency. Aquinas handled its opponents with relative ease throughout Halton league play, dropping only three sets on its way to an 8-1 record during the regular season. So Boyle was a little bit worried that his team might take things for granted in Mondays Division 2 Halton final at Sheridan College. We were due for our come- uppance the whole year, he said. The deeper you go into the season without being defeated, especially in a 15-year-olds mind, the more you feel like youre invincible. The Raiders put their coachs fears to rest Monday, however, delivering a solid effort in a 25- 20, 25-20 victory over the Robert Bateman Wild. They did play well, said Boyle, who was particularly pleased with his teams attention to detail defensively. Aquinas was led all season by the above-the-net game of cap- tain Owen Coulthard, Adam Leclaire and Matt Alves. Troy Morneau and Jamie Bailey provided reliable setting for the Raiders throughout the year, while Yama Sakha was the teams energy player. Grade 9 students Alex Dias and Austin Rodgers also showed improvement throughout the year, earning their way into the starting rotation on occasion. They will be the cornerstones of the Raiders squad next year as Aquinas shoots for another Halton title.
