We are very excited to have Santa's planes flying overhead this year, weather permitting of course. With our theme A 'Reel' Christmas at the Movies it will be perfect to begin the Parade Top Gun-style, said Pam Damoff, Santa Claus Parade chair. High schools are encouraged to enter and compete for the Best School Float and last years champ, St. Ignatius of Loyola has issued a chal- lenge to all other high schools. Ten-year-old Victoria Lawrynowycz won the annual colouring contest to ride in the parade along with the Grand Marshall. Kids also were able to take a chance at riding on Santas float. No visit from Santa would be complete with- out marching bands playing the streets of down- town Oakville and Kerr Village on Parade Day. This years lineup will provide entertain- ment for all ages. Among the bands performing will be the Halton Regional Police Service Pipes & Drums, dressed in their traditional Chisholm tartan and leading off the parade. Returning this year are the popular Optimists Alumni Drum Corps, Merriam Music Percussion Ensemble, Prime Time Brass and 540 Air Cadets as well as the Top Hat Marching Orchestra from Burlington. Also in the lineup is the White Oaks Secondary School Marching Band; Oakville's first and only school marching band, as well as Burlington's MM Robinson Drumline the ROTC Toronto (Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corp) thats a modern-day colour guard, twirling flags, spinning rifles, dancing and using other props to create a stunning visu- al production, choreographed to some of today's hottest sounds. Two new bands include the 150 Hamilton Tiger Band, a 30-member air cadet band, from the John Foote Armouries, downtown Hamilton and the Filarmonica Marching Band, the second oldest Portuguese band in Ontario. Now in its 62nd year, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition in town. The parade also has a long history with its toy and food drives and the sale of red noses for charity to make the community a better place for those less fortunate On Parade Day the Kinsmen Club of Oakville will collect non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army. They encourage every- one to bring at least one non-perishable food item. Cash donations will also be accepted. The Oakville Professional Fire Fighters will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade-goers. Bring an unwrapped gift with you on Parade Day. Gifts for older children are especially needed. We remind those bringing gifts to not forget children over the age of 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the fire fighters will have trucks starting downtown at about 8:30 a.m. just before the official start of the parade and volunteers will be accepting dona- tions. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood are celebrating its 16th year of sell- ing noses for charity at the parade. Dressed as clowns, this group sells its famous red noses for $2, with all proceeds this year supporting Wellspring-Halton. Members are easily identi- fied by their red sweatshirts or red aprons. The Kinsmen Club of Oakville, the Oakville Professional Fire Fighters and the Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood are the only groups authorized to accept donations at the parade. The parade will go ahead rain or shine so dress for the weather. Park your car at the Oakville GO Station, or take a connecting bus to the Oakville GO, and board the Santa Shuttle to the parade. The free Santa Shuttle will run every 10 minutes now from the Oakville GO station stopping at all regular stops along Reynolds to the Church/Dunn bus terminal. The Santa Shuttle runs from 8-11:15 a.m. and is provided by Oakville Transit.
