The exhibit, titled Un-home-ly, will be presented at both Oakville Galleries locations at Centennial Square and Gairloch Gardens. It opens Saturday, Nov. 27. It is an assembly of paintings, sculptures, video and photography by a group of Canadian and internation- al female artists working on the theme of the uncan- ny or the strange. The general theme of the exhibition is women whove taken every day situations or objects and every- day representations and turned them strange, said exhibit curator and Oakville Galleries director Matthew Hyland. One example of the show is a piece of art that looks like a pile of laundry, he said. But when an observer looks at it from behind he or she will see a shell of a pile of laundry and inside its full of cigarettes and lighters and other compulsive habits that people try to hide. Its work thats been done over the last 40 years, he said. I think that it provides a really interesting trajectory of how artists have looked at everyday life and challenged us about everyday life in a new way. I hope the exhibit shows a, how far weve come and b, how far we have to go. The artists address subjects such as politics, pop culture and art history and showcase the tension between the familiar and the strange, the attractive and the repulsive to produce a notion of the uncanny that is both visceral and critical. Participating artists include Lucy Gunning, Mako Idemitsu, Suzy Lake, Liz Magor, Luanne Martineau, Shana Moulton, Vale Mrn, Paulette Phillips, Pipilotti Rist, Martha Rosler, Nicola Tyson and Jin-me Yoon. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit on Nov. 26 at 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Centennial Square location followed by a reception at the Gairloch Gardens location from 8:30-10:30 p.m. This is the first in a series of exhibitions at the gallery that addresses key themes in contemporary feminist art practices.
