Flynn was unopposed at the associations nomination meeting at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall on Thursday, Nov. 18. When the nominations were closed and he was acclaimed as can- didate, Flynn was cheered by more than 100 supporters. In attendance were also Oakville councillors Mary Chapin, Tom Adams, Alan Johnston, Allan Elgar, Roger Lapworth along with Mayor Rob Burton and councillor elect Pam Damoff. Nominating Flynn was Damoffs son Fraser, a Brock University stu- dent, who has interned at the MPPs office. Kevin Flynn is more than just your average MPP. Im sure every- one in this room has a story about Kevin helping them out at one time or another, he said. Kevin Flynn cares about Oakville and its citizens. Kevin Flynn stands up for all of Oakville and is proud to do so. I think we would all agree that Kevin Flynn is great at what he does because he lis- tens. No matter the issue or a per- sons political affiliation, Kevin is always willing to listen to what you have to say and help you out in whatever way he can. After Derek Teevan, regional vice-president of the Central Region of the Ontario Liberal Party, closed the nominations and declared Flynn as winner, applause filled the room while the MPP took to the podium. Flynn thanked his supporters and said he was proud to accept the nomination. I think its really appropriate that we had somebody in the posi- tion of life that Fraser is in because hes able to witness some of the changes that weve been able to make in our society, he said of his nominator. The changes weve made to our schools, the investments weve made in our post-secondary institutions. And in the coming months or years, hopefully, as Fraser enters the job market, hell find theres an Ontario here thats worth fighting for, theres an Ontario for him with a job. He said since the Liberals have taken power in provincial parlia- ment in 2003 changes are becoming visible such as new hospitals being built. Flynn said more nurses are being hired. Since 2003 one million more people have a family doctor, high quality jobs have been created with more than 300,000 of them in the infrastructure sector. Flynn spoke about the recession and how it led to job losses, savings disappearing, and the fall of the housing market. We were determined that our province come out of this recession much stronger than it went in. Weve always made the tough deci- sions as a government. Sometimes, theyre not always popular, but they are the right decisions, Flynn said. He said since May 2009 employ- ment increased by nearly 200,000 jobs and, as of October, Ontario has regained 75 per cent of the jobs it lost to the recession. He said Ontario introduced the childrens activity tax credit, Ontario sales tax credit and the har- monized sales tax, which he said helped lead Ontario out of the recession. Every economist across this country, right wing, left wing, right down the middle, tells us its (the HST) the right thing to do and we were brave enough to do it and I dont think we need to apologize for that to anybody, he said. He also talked about the provin- cial government listening to the people of Oakville and having the courage to scrap its plans to build a gas-fired power plant. He said the province is expected to pay more than $1 billion for the construction of the new Oakville hospital, which is the provinces single biggest investment in Oakville. Aside from the construction dollars, he said the hospital will also bring new jobs to the area. While Flynn has secured his nomination for another term in public office, several Ontario Liberals have stated they are pulling out of next falls race. The Toronto Star reported the minister of intergovernmental affairs and house leader Monique Smith announced she will not run in the election. Her announcement came after two of her Liberal col- leagues, MPPs Steve Peters (Elgin- Middlesex-London) and Jim Brownell (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry), announced they will not seek re-election. The Ontario election is sched- uled for October 6, 2011. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn will run again for Liberals Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn No matter the issue or a persons political affiliation, Kevin is always willing to listen to what you have to say and help you out in whatever way he can.
