Haddon, the grandson of Canadas first pilot, J.A.D. McCurdy, was recently made an honourary Canadian Air Force Colonel during a ceremony at the Canadian Forces Base in Borden, Ontario. I was very humbled to receive this, said Haddon. It was just a wonderful, wonderful experience. In addition to being the grandson of McCurdy, Haddon said he has worked on behalf of the air force for the last two years, serving as part of the Air Force Speakers Bureau. Haddon was also part of the team, which in 2009 built and flew a repli- ca of the Silver Dart aircraft McCurdy used to make his historic flight. Thats probably one of the many reasons I was chosen, said Haddon. Plus a lot of people have met me and gotten to know me and think that I would be a worthy representa- tive of the air force. Haddon, who is now the hon- ourary colonel of the Canadian Forces School for Aerospace Technology and Engineering, went on to say that an honourary colonel serves as the link between the mili- tary and the community. He goes out to the communi- ty and meets the people, drops the puck at hockey games, he upholds the traditions of the Canadian Air Force and speaks to people who are looking to get into the Canadian Air Force, said Haddon. So theres a lot of meeting of the public and a lot of speaking and just being the vital link between the base he is representing and the community. Haddons grandfather, McCurdy, made his pioneer flight on Feb. 23, 1909 lifting off a frozen lake in Baddeck, Nova Scotia in the early aircraft known as the Silver Dart. As part of Alexander Graham Bells Aerial Experiment Association, McCurdy had helped to design and build the Silver Dart, which was the last in a series of experimental aircraft the associa- tion had put together in the hope of creating a flying machine capa- ble of sustained flight.
