Young Jordan Pires, 5, and Maclain Agnew, 3, recently received a Pride and Joy award at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. It was a gala emceed by Don Cherry and his daughter Cindy. The first-ever Pride and Joy Awards were launched this year by the ErinoakKids Foundation, which exists to raise funds for ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development. The awards were to honour client chil- dren as well as brothers/sisters who set an upstanding example helping their siblings with challenges who are clients of ErinoakKids. A crowd of 250 attended the event, which raised an estimated $100,000 for the Foundation, according to Anissa Hilborn, foundation president. Both Oakville children won the Little Acorn award, for kids who strive mightily against their challenges and make great progress through hard and sustained effort. Five-year-old Jordan Pires astonishes her team of health professionals with her fierce determination and refusal to acknowledge the words never and cant. Maclain Agnew is only three years old, but he touches everyone he meets with his determination to overcome his hearing dif- ficulties and communicate with others. Likewise, his parents unwavering commit- ment to helping him reach his full potential is an inspiration. The Oakville youths were among seven recipients of the Pride and Joy awards. ErinoakKids is the largest children's treatment centre (CTC) in Ontario. ErinoakKids, located in Erin Mills, provides treatment, rehabilitation and support serv- ices to about 9,000 children with disabilities and their families each year.
