With a post-secondary bursary provided by the CAS, Janice earned a child and youth worker diploma from Sheridan College. Three months ago, the agency that used to care for her hired Janice to do the same for current youths. Its a full-time job while its being established, but becomes part-time in the fall. Thats okay with Janice because shell be head- ing back to school by then, univer- sity this time, to do a degree in social work. I think it was my personal experience that was the overriding factor in getting this job, she said. Right now, she meets with youths age 14-21 in the Halton CASs care to hear their issues and concerns every other month. She then takes those issues to the top, on their behalf. I tell them to bug me and I will bug my superiors because I know who to go to and have the time to do it, said Janice. Im someone these young people can talk to, and when I tell them I understand because Ive been in care too, their eyes light up. Currently shes planning a Christmas dinner for her charges, similar to the Thanksgiving feast she organized at an area restaurant for about 30 youths. This week, she heads to a conference in Ottawa to meet with other youth advocates to pick their brains about ideas, programs and strategies to con- nect with the kids in care. I knew enough to ask for help when I needed it, whether it was a practical matter or emotional stress, said Janice. But it took some maturing to get to that point. She realized quickly that relying on friends for advice isnt always the best way to go because they dont have the same experiences. Theres a world of difference between being grounded and struggling just to keep a roof over your head, she said.
