Tobi was adopted from the Oakville and Milton Humane Society and was estimated at being nine months to a year old at the time of adoption. By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Tobi, clad in a Roots jacket now that the breeze is cool, takes a 1.5 km walk each day. Just recently, his owner Romi Schmid was asked, How old is your puppy? This puppy is 19, said Schmid. At age 19 Tobis birthday or adoption day by the Schmid family is Dec. 4 Tobi may be the oldest dog in Oakville. It appears he may be nearing the top 10 of the oldest dogs in the world whose age has been verified. According to Wikipedia, 20 dogs have been claimed to reach 20 years of age or older, eight of whom were veri- fied by Guinness World Records. Verified' dogs had their birth certifi- cate observed and validated by Guinness World Records. Schmid is just happy Tobi is still with her. I am so very grateful for every moment of every day and for the bless- ing that Tobi brought into our lives. I hope you publish Tobi's story as he deserves to be famous, said Schmid. The Oakville woman said she takes Tobi to the Animal Hospital of Oakville on South Service Road. Tobi, 19, is quite the pup By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Perspective is on Janice S.s side in her new role as the Halton Childrens Aid Societys sole youth advocate. Eight years ago, at age 14, Janice not her real name was one of the youths in the agencys care. The Halton resident says her parents tossed her out onto the streets when her behaviour became unmanage- able. She lived with a friend at first, then in the intervening four years, until age 18, lived with three foster fami- lies. With the help of the CAS, Janice moved into her own apartment when she became an adult in the laws eyes. At that point, she had to learn how to budget on a fixed income, clean, cook, study and manage her time between classes, homework and a part-time job. Self-discipline taught her to save 10 per cent of all of her earnings. Ive hit rock bottom financially and I dont want to be there again, said Janice. One-time CAS ward is now an advocate for others See Tobi page 8
